For most people, the top of the year is the perfect time to set your sights on new goals, habits, and experiences that’ll make your life much better than the previous year. We are just weeks away from 2020, and it’s not only the start of a new year but a whole new decade which means that decisions we make now could put things in motion—positive or negative—for years to come.
There’s always more to strive for, so why not make this new year the time to truly go for gold? If you don’t know where to start, take a look at your habits. Here are 5 habits that’ll make you a happier and healthier woman in 2020.
Try intuitive eating.
Counting calories, eating foods we don’t enjoy, and going on diets that we absolutely cannot maintain are just some of the terrible things we put ourselves through just to be a little healthier. Truth be told, none of this is even necessary when you eat intuitively. Intuitive eating is when you listen to your body above all else.
You no longer overeat because now you’re only eating when you feel hungry, and then you stop once your full. You understand that a balanced diet doesn’t mean you must cut out the foods you enjoy.
It simply means you eat fruits, vegetables, and whole grains—then have what you like in moderation. Intuitive eating isn’t at all about restriction or limitation, but feeding your body what you know is right. No numbers or counting necessary.
Develop a nighttime ritual.
So much importance is put onto morning routines, but the real magic is in what you do at night. Think about it for a second: there isn’t a cup of coffee, a workout routine, or a set of affirmations in existence that could truly offset numerous sleepless or uncomfortable nights.
To develop a nighttime routine that feeds your need for self-care and quality sleep. Meditating in candlelight, taking a bath with essential oils, making your bed cozy and comfortable, unplugging from social media and television, and getting into a relaxing skin and body care routine could make both your mornings and nights much better.
Start a gratitude journal.
When we write about our goals, we focus on things we have not yet achieved. However, when we say what we are grateful for, we focus on all of the beautiful things that have happened to us already. Sometimes when we are moving through life and facing all kinds of struggles and chasing new horizons, we forget the great things that are currently taking place.
It is true that life will give us a little sugar with our salt, and perhaps it’s time to recognize and truly appreciate the sugar. Write down three things you are grateful for every single day as a reminder of what beauty is already manifested in your daily life.
Move your body.
The word “exercise” sounds completely terrible to people who don’t like to do it very much. We’ve been conditioned, in a way, to believe that working out is unenjoyable and even a form of punishment for our bodies, but this is actually not the case.
Dancing, casually playing sports, swimming, going for walks, hiking, and even cleaning are ways to keep active without putting too much stress on yourself. Get your body moving and feel stronger, energized, and healthier in the long run.
Invest in better experiences.
Being mindful of what you give your money, time, and energy to is the key to living a happier life. Often times, we feel like we have to invest these things in material goods, luxury items, and the like. And while these things do give us some happiness, it’s temporary.
However, creating memories with your family and friends, traveling, trying new things, going to new places, and taking exciting chances is priceless. You don’t need to go all out and make everything extravagant—just make each experience worth it.
