As of 2024, Black buying power in the U.S. reached approximately $4.9 trillion, a major milestone yet still dwarfed by the $120.4 trillion held by white Americans.
More studies show that the median income for Black households in the U.S. ($52,860) is about 32% lower than that of white households ($77,250).
And with Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives currently under attack, these disparities are expected to widen even further. While DEI cutbacks affect almost everyone—except white American males—including women, people of color, LGBTQ+ communities, the disabled, and the elderly, their dismantling hits Black Americans the hardest, as they have been historically excluded from equitable opportunities.
That’s why it’s now more important than ever to redirect our spending toward Black-owned businesses; because when we collectively choose to buy Black, we create a ripple effect that challenges systemic inequities while fostering generational wealth within our communities.
Not to mention, we get to support businesses that accept and celebrate us, not hate or tolerate us just for profit.
So, as we step into Black History Month, let’s move beyond Amazon and other corporate giants that fail to align with our values. Instead, let’s invest in these 8 Black-owned e-commerce brands and businesses that are actively shaping a more equitable future for us and generations to come.
