8 Homemade Hair Masks to Treat Dry And Damaged Hair

Legend has it that hair is a woman’s crown, and let’s be honest; everyone wants to have a thick, shiny mane of straight or kinky hair.

In reality, however, many people have dry dull looking hair, and in some cases, damaged.
Your no-nonsense friend will probably tell you to cut it off and regrow healthier hair, but this option isn’t for everyone.

You might also not be willing to experiment with commercial hair products because, more often than not, they might be the reason you’re in this predicament.

So, what other options do you have? Cue in DIY hair masks.

DIY hair masks are unique because most of them utilize ingredients you already have; you can mix and play around with the elements and do them at the comfort of your favorite couch.

So, to help you find the best slathering and lathering hair mask ingredients, here are our eight best homemade hair treatments:

Coconut Oil and Honey

Coconut oil is loaded with Vitamin E and fatty acids that are easily absorbed into the hair shafts, while honey features humectants that allow your hair to hold on to moisture for longer.

The combination of honey and coconut oil thus leaves your hair feeling moisturized, softer, shinier, and moisturized.

Directions

• Mix the ingredients in a bowl
• Slather it on your hair
• Massage it for five minutes or so
• Let the mixture sit for 30 minutes
• Rinse it off with some lukewarm water

Banana, Honey, and Yogurt

The ingredients in this hair mask seem like they belong more in a smoothie than on your hair.

However, the combination of bananas, yogurt, and honey helps your hair retain enough moisture, soothe and balance your scalp ph. and leave your hair looking full and shiny.

Directions

• Blend the ingredients till they’re lump-free
• Apply on your hair and let it sit for 20 minutes
• Rinse off with some lukewarm water

Avocado, Olive Oil and Honey

You probably associate avocados with guacamole, but this fatty fruit might be what you need to fix your damaged hair.

The minerals and vitamins in the avocado help seal the damaged hair strands, while the honey assists with moisture retention.

Olive oil, on the other hand, helps provide you with a nice glossy shine.

Directions

• Mash the avocado in a bowl, then mix it up with honey and olive oil to form a smooth, thick paste
• Slather the mixture on your hair
• Let it sit for ten minutes before rinsing off some lukewarm water

Sweet Potato, Honey, and Yogurt

We know, we know. Sweet potato is meant to be in stuffing.

But…

The combination of honey, sweet potato, and yogurt can help give your hair that much-needed boost.

Sweet potatoes and honey provide a moisturizing and healing effect, while yogurt soothes and cleans your scalp while also getting rid of product build-up.

Directions

• Mash your leftover sweet potatoes
• Mix it with four to five drops of honey and yogurt till you get a smooth paste
• Slather the mixture on your hair
• Pop on a shower cap and let it sit for 30 minutes
• Rinse it off with some warm water

Olive Oil and Coconut Oil

Hair masks don’t always have to have a heavy consistency. You can opt for an oily hair mask to combat your dry hair—cue in olive and coconut oil.

These essential oils not only help your skin thrive but according to research, they are absorbed into your shafts and lock moisture in your hair. The two also give you that beautiful commercial-ready glossy hair.

For even better results, make sure that you warm the oils a little before application. You’ll thank us later!

Milk and Honey

This is another lightweight but effective hair mask you can try.

The milk helps soften and strengthen your hair to minimize future damage, and honey helps locks in all the moisture.

Directions

• In a spritz bottle, mix the honey and milk
• Spray the mixture on your hair

Tip: Use warm milk for this procedure (it gives you that much-needed hair glow), and remember you can also replace regular dairy milk with coconut milk if you prefer.

Egg, Aloe Vera, and Olive Oil

Your weekend morning breakfast just got a bit more multipurpose.

As you know, eggs are rich in vitamins that make your hair resistant to damage. In fact, research shows that Vitamin A and E, plus biotin and folate are some of the nutrients your hair needs for that healthy glow.

So, applying this mixture to your scalp can infuse your hair roots and trigger growth.
Aloe and olive oil, on the other hand, add some bounce and shine to dull, lifeless hair. Aloe is also ideal for fighting dandruff, as it features anti-fungal properties.

Directions

• Crack an egg and be sure only to use the egg yolk
• Mix it up with a spoonful of aloe vera and stir
• Warm up the olive oil and add three to four drops into the egg-aloe mixture
• Lather the mask on your hair and let it sit for about 20 minutes
• Rinse it off with some warm water

Mayonnaise and Olive Oil

We can all agree that mayonnaise is the perfect dip for your French fries – that’s no debate.
However, since it’s made from eggs and vinegar, mayo is considered ideal for strengthening your hair.

It also helps keep your hair shiny, soft, and hydrated.

Directions

• Whisk the two ingredients in a bowl
• Apply the mixture to your hair, ensuring you cover the roots
• Let it for about 30 minutes, then rinse off with lukewarm water

Now that you know how to restore that natural hair glow pour yourself a glass of wine, queue up your favorite show and get ready for healthy hair!
