I am still head over heels in love with @Hannahmagazine’s latest Cover featuring the gorgeous Tarana Burke, that we talked about a week ago in this post! Of all the Magazine covers featuring natural hair in April, that one is definitely one of my faves.
The other day Refinary29 made an excellent point, they said:
“The conversation of “Hollywood beauty” needs to include natural hair textures and, thankfully, many of April 2018’s cover stars (including Yara Shahidi and Viola Davis) help achieve that mission. The stars ahead are wearing their curls, coils, locs, and protective styles that look gorgeous, and serve an even greater cause.”
The truth is the narrative of inclusion especially from our perspective gets a bit old, especially with black girl ran magazines like Hannah and Sesi ensuring that our faces are represented well.
Aside from that, it is however definitely great to see women of color being featured with their natural hair all over newsstands and on coffee tables! – With that said here are 9 magazine covers featuring black women in all of their natural hair, protective style and loc glory!

Yara Shahidi for Essence
Our girl Yara is the cover model for this month’s Essence with a cute little style we all kinda wish we had the deets on.
NEW COVER ALERT 🚨! @oprah hit the nail on the head when she told @yarashahidi that her future looks so bright it burns her eyes. There’s literally no dulling her shine! But, don’t be fooled—she’s more than her seemingly perfect persona. Yara is an activist, a future Harvard student, a phenomenal poet 😉, and like the rest of us, just taking it all one day at a time. Hit the 🔗 in bio for more on our new April issue. On newsstands 3/29. #IssaEssenceSlay 📷: @sophyholland
Yara Shahidi for TSingapore
Yara also covers TSingapore for their unconventional issue
In the April Unconventional issue of T Singapore, we talk to Yara Shahidi about being a leading voice of a new generation, find ethereal beauty in the muted colours of a bygone era, get to know Francesco Risso of Marni and discuss with three individuals the lessons learned from growing a company beyond home grounds. . SZA for Fader
Sza covers Fader and her message on Instagram about it is everything, read below:
I don’t have words for this . Tried all day and everything sounds wack lol . can’t really explain what it’s like to go from “she’s not cover material ” to two covers in one day . can’t explain hearing “no” more times than my self esteem can handle but building resilience . Training ur brain not to be bitter . finding the joy in each lesson and accepting a blessing whenever it comes ..expect nothing. This is for my girls that don’t feel like “cover material” . For my ppl a lil rough around the edges but still trying really hard . For anyone feeling like “No” diminishes ur ability to tap into the universe and be fucking great . STAY IN IT !! Believe you are worthy and stay soft . Stay excited about ur dreams !! Speak them ! The universe is watching and hears you. knows the exact time to align . Trust urself . I believe in you . I love you . Fuck anyone who says different . They don’t know u like the universe do 😉 @thefader thank u for this blessing . photos by @carastricker fashion by @shibonleigh story by @kararbrown 💜 link n bio
