Ashanti is still beaming with joy over her engagement to Nelly.
In a recent interview with Deidre Behar on Entertainment Tonight, the “Every Lil Thing” singer shared the delightful story of Nelly’s unexpected proposal.
“It was such a beautiful, intimate moment,” she told Behar. “We were not dressy.”
The award-winning artist recounted how she was lounging in pajamas, casually watching television in bed, when Nelly completely “shocked” her with the proposal.
“I definitely had one of his t-shirts and boxers,” she chuckled, reflecting on the casual setting.
“I mean, I felt like it was gonna come soon. I didn’t know when. And the way that it happened was just so funny. I’m sitting on the bed watching TV with boxers on, you know what I mean? It’s literally not sexy.”
Despite the unconventional attire, Ashanti was overwhelmed with joy. “I cried and gave him the biggest hug and kiss ever,” she shared animatedly.
“I Face Timed everyone I know…I was overjoyed and shocked and surprised and happy. Kind of like all in one.”
As for their impending nuptials, Ashanti is already envisioning her dream day, though she’s mindful of their busy schedules, especially with the arrival of their bundle of joy.
“We’re both extremely busy obviously with the baby coming; everything else takes the back seat,” she said, noting that she would like to have her baby before the wedding.
She has a month in mind for her big day, though she isn’t ready to reveal when yet. All she knows is that she wants to include a “combination of fashion, glam, Caribbean vibes. I have to have a beach, an ocean, sunshine, palm trees!”
Elsewhere in the interview, Ashanti reflected on how far she and Nelly have come since their early dating days.
“Never in a million years did I think we would be here,’ she gushed. ‘Ten years ago – maybe yes – but after our breakup, you know, I didn’t even think we’d ever have a conversation again.”
Ashanti and Nelly dated from 2003 to 2013 before parting ways.
However, in 2021, their paths crossed again at Fat Joe and Ja Rule’s Verzuz battle. The ‘Body On Me’ rapper asked for Ashanti’s number, rekindling their romance.
“The growth has been like superb, you know, like on both ends,’ Ashanti shared. “We are both at a place where, like before, sometimes we would argue and walk out, slam the door, and not talk for a few days.”
“Now, it’s kind of like, ‘All right, you good?’ You know, give me a kiss goodbye, and it’s over. It’s not like holding on and bickering, and we find out what the resolution is. We apologize.”
With their little one on the way, Ashanti feels she and her fiancé are “so, so aligned,” and she can’t wait for their biggest collaboration yet.
“I think we both are so passionate about working and about building family,’ she noted. ‘We are so, so aligned.”
In April, the singer-songwriter expressed her excitement about motherhood and the support she’s received from Nelly, her family, and loyal fans.
“This new year of my life is filled with love, hope, and anticipation,” she told Essence at the time.
“Motherhood is something that I have looked forward to, and sharing this with my family, fiancé, and loyal fans, who have been so supportive of my career, is an amazing experience.”
