Ava DuVernay has conquered our TV shows and hearts and is now set to dominate our sweet tooth.
She is officially the first Black woman with her image on a pint of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream.
A Delicious Partnership
Ben & Jerry recently announced its partnership with the legendary filmmaker.
During its launch, the ice cream company introduced ‘Lights! Caramel! Action!”
The ice cream, directed by the filmmaker, contains slabs of chocolate chip cookie dough, salted caramel swirls, vanilla ice cream, and graham cracker swirls.
The ‘Lights! Caramel! Action!’ ice cream starts shipping this January in two versions: dairy-based ice cream and non-dairy almond milk.
Deliciousness With A Purpose
Ava DuVernay isn’t just teaming up with the ice cream company to make a quick buck.
Proceeds from every sale of ‘Lights! Caramel! Action!’ will benefit the filmmaker’s non-profit, ARRAY Alliance.
Through ARRAY Alliance, DuVernay hopes to do social work that elevates and amplifies the creative works of women directors and Black artists.
The director’s plans for the non-profit also include:
- Providing education, grants, and mentorship for underrepresented creatives who want a career in the film industry
- Make film sets increasingly inclusive
Ava DuVernay founded ARRAY Alliance in 2011.
So far, the non-profit she dedicated to narrative change has won a Peabody Award, among others.
Through this multi-platform social impact collective, DuVernay has set up four mission-driven entities:
- ARRAY Releasing, which distributes indie films from underrepresented filmmakers
- ARRAY Filmworks, which produces original content
- ARRAY Creative Campus, which handles production and programming
- ARRAY Alliance, the chief non-profit arm
Ava DuVernay Is Bringing The Flavor
Ice cream is among the filmmaker’s comfort foods.
To make ‘Lights! Caramel! Action!’ a different ice cream, DuVernay enlisted help from food scientists.
Together, they crafted a distinct flavor using the filmmaker’s favorite ingredients.
The ice cream has just launched, so we recommend trying it out and tasting Ava DuVernay’s creation for yourself.
