“Growing up, I always imagined what it would be like if the girls in the Fairytales looked like me. So when I imagined them, they always had my favourite elements of MY Culture too!” – Karissa C
That was quote taken from the Instagram of Karissa C whose art went viral this week because she decided to re-imagine our favourite Disney princesses according to our own African heritage. Karissa is from St. Vincent and from her brief bio she is what she likes to call a ‘compulsive creative’.
Her work is remarkable, check out the view:
This is so special because as a Caribbean girl myself, the Disney princesses were everything. Who else didn’t love Ariel or Cinderella? But never once did I consider when they would look like if they were a part of my own culture.
Seeing them now I have to say thank you to Karissa with a K for being so creative and at the same time so much more aware of our own culture than I was when I fell in love with the princesses!
