Chris Brown was granted bail on Wednesday, May 21, following his recent arrest in connection with an alleged assault on music producer Abe Diaw at a nightclub in 2023.
The 36-year-old artist had initially been denied bail due to the severity of the accusations, which include causing grievous bodily harm, according to the BBC.
Brown, who has not yet entered a plea, appeared before the Manchester Magistrates’ Court after being taken into custody in Manchester, England, on May 15.
According to PEOPLE Brown’s arrest on May 15 after receiving a statement from the Metropolitan Police.
“A 36-year-old man was arrested at a hotel in Manchester shortly after 02:00hrs on Thursday, 15 May on suspicion of grievous bodily harm. He has been taken into custody where he remains,” the statement read.
It continued, noting, “The arrest relates to an incident at a venue in Hanover Square on [Feb. 19, 2023]. The investigation is being led by detectives from the Central West Area Basic Command Unit.’’
A follow-up statement named Brown and noted that he had been charged with grievous bodily harm with intent.
During his May 16 hearing, Brown’s case was deemed “too serious” for a magistrates’ court by District Judge Joanne Hirst. It was sent on to a crown court, where a trial will be conducted.
At the time, the celebrity was denied bail amid concerns that he might be a “flight risk.”
Per BBC, the terms of the bail dictated that Brown needed to pay $4.5 million of his bail “immediately.” He’ll have a week to pay off the remainder. The outlet also reported that he “must surrender his passport if he is not traveling on tour.”
Judge Tony Baumgartner dictated additional terms, stating that the court needed to be aware of where the “With You” singer resided. He also cannot seek out documents to leave the U.K. and is unable to reach out to his accuser or visit the club where the alleged attack took place.
Brown was sued by Diaw in November 2023 over the alleged attack. PEOPLE examined the lawsuit at the time, which accused Brown of using “crushing blows” to hit Diaw in the head.
Diaw reportedly suffered “lacerations on his head and torn ligaments in his leg” as well as “permanent” damage and “severe emotional distress.”
A bottle of Don Julio 1942 tequila was reportedly used in the attack.
During the initial hearing, Prosecutor Hannah Nicholls alleged that there was CCTV footage of Brown assaulting Diaw.
After kicking off in early June, Brown’s tour will continue with stops across Europe, including several dates within the U.K. He’ll continue with dates across the United States and Canada in July.
Chris shared on his stories, that he is headed to the stage.
