‘Deadpool & Wolverine‘ crashed into cinemas with the subtlety of a chimichanga to the face, equally chaotic and hilarious.
And I loved every second of it.
The latest Deadpool flick is a triumphant return for the Merc with a Mouth and a bold feature from the family-friendly Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Ryan Reynolds returns as Wade Wilson/Deadpool in the role he made his own.
The quick-fire quips and meta-commentary are as sharp as ever, delivering a fresh antidote to the self-important MCU.
However, Hugh Jackman is the main attraction as Wolverine.
It’s no secret that Reynolds has wanted to make a Deadpool flick with old friend Jackman for years.
And thankfully, the stars finally aligned.
Jackman easily slips back into the adamantium-laced mutant’s skin, bringing back the oft-missed rage and gruff demeanor.
So, now that Reynolds got his dream team up, what do they do in this thing?
What’s ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ About (Spoiler-Free)?
‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ kicks off with Deadpool applying to join the Avengers but getting rejected.
Wilson hangs up his boots for six years until his universe is threatened with annihilation.
So, Wilson travels to the multiverse to enlist a Wolverine who can save his universe.
What I Loved About The Movie
The Action Sequences
Deadpool & Wolverine has fantastic action sequences, made even better because it’s almost impossible to kill Deadpool or Wolverine.
The sequences are gleefully violent and gory, taking full advantage of the movie’s R rating–keep the kids away from this one.
One memorable scene involves a Honda minivan, showing how the two leads can fight ferociously in close quarters.
The Wit & Humor
The movie takes jabs at the MCU’s convoluted multiverse storylines and many other stuff.
However, if you weren’t a fan of the meta-humor in the first two Deadpool movies, the humor in this one won’t change your mind.
The Cameos
If you hate spoilers and want to go into this movie blind, I’d suggest you watch it as soon as possible—many spoilers are already online.
The movie features amazing cameos from several characters that will surprise you.
And, if you’ve followed superheroes since the turn of the century, some of the cameos will make you cheer.
The Not-So-Good
The Visuals
Visually, Deadpool movies haven’t been impressive, and this latest flick does little to buck the trend.
While the budget might be bigger, some locations–especially one where our heroes spend a big chunk of the movie—just aren’t appealing.
Still, that could be a personal thing.
The Relevance To The MCU
‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ adds little to the MCU’s story.
So, if you’re looking for a plot-dense feature that moves the MCU forward, this movie won’t save you.
However, it’s a loving ode to non-MCU Marvel movies.
The Bottom Line
“Deadpool & Wolverine” is what we get when everyone involved is doing what they love.
While the movie isn’t perfect, it’s a bold, brash, blood-soaked film that still treats its characters with love.
In short, it’s well worth your time.
