It’s official: Warner Bros are developing a fourth film in Ice Cube’s popular Friday franchise.
According to Complex, the actor revealed the news in an interview on Flavor Flav’s Flavor of the Week show.
“We finally got some traction with Warner Brothers. They have new leadership. My man Mike DeLuca, who used to be at New Line [Cinema] when I first started, when I first did the first Friday and Players Club and All About the Benjamins. Mike DeLuca was there, so now he’s running Warner Brothers.”
Ice Cube added:
“Mike DeLuca was there right so now he’s running Warner Brothers and and him and my man Michael Gruber was like, ‘Yo, what the fuck is going on with Friday? Man, let’s get this shit back online.”
The actor revealed that Warner Bros frustrated him with the movie as they took “so long” to get things back on track.
He added that while Warner Bros was “dicking around, not doing the movie,” the franchise was “losing people.”
The franchise has lost actors John Witherspoon, Anthony Johnson, and Tiny “Zeus” Lister Jr in the past five years.
“I was a little hot ’cause they had took so long. Because John Witherspoon passed away, Tiny passed away, A.J. Johnson passed away. Man, we keep losing people. And y’all keep dicking around not doing the movie the way it need to be done.”
Ice Cube finished:
“They want to do it. But the key is it gotta be done. So, they finally came to their senses.”
Ice Cube Called Out Warner Bros Last Year
Last year, Ice Cube called out Warner Bros in a conversation with TMZ.
“Warner Bros. is weird right now. I don’t know what they’re doing. They don’t know what they’re doing. We’d love to have it back. I think it’s going be close to a time when we get it back. So, we’ll either wait for that time, or we’ll keep trying to convince them that they need to let us control the movie. It’s my movie, but they have distribution control.”
In January, the rapper also shed light on the situation with Warner Bros about the rights to Friday.
When asked if hoping for a new Friday movie was a lost cause, the actor replied: “No, never.”
The first Friday film came out in 1995, starring:
- Ice Cube
- Chris Tucker
- Nia Long
- Bernie Mac
- Lister Jr.
- John Witherspoon
- Regina King
- Faizon Love
- Anna Maria Horsford
The film was a hit, grossing over $27 million from a $3.5 million budget.
Friday’s success earned it two sequels: Next Friday and Friday After Next.
