People have been talking about Lee Daniels’ film The Deliverance since it dropped and Lee added more fuel to the fire when he described one of his characters as part of ‘the fabric’ of the black community.
According to COMPLEX the Netflix pic stars Glenn Close, Mo’Nique, Andra Day, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, and is Daniels’ first foray into the horror genre.
Prior to its release last Friday, the filmmaker took to X, writing,
“Every Black person knows an Alberta. She’s part of the fabric of our community, but we’ve never seen her on screen before. Thank you Glenn for bringing her magnificently to life.”

The good folks over on X did not agree, many wondering what he even meant by that.
One person said:
How is a white woman who talks with a Blaccent part of the fabric of the Black community? She’s emulating US, not the other way around

Another questioned ‘whose community?’ Who is ‘our’?

The Deliverance is based on a true story
We are not sure what Lee meant when he said the fabric of our community but we do know his film was based on a true story.
Additionally he was particularly excited about Glenn’s role:

As far as the original story goes…in 2011 Latoya Ammons and her family’s reported experiences with demonic possession in Gary, Indiana.
The story gained widespread attention when Latoya Ammons, her mother Rosa Campbell, and her three children claimed they were tormented by demonic forces in their home.
The events included accounts of mysterious illnesses, strange sounds, levitation, and even the children exhibiting supernatural strength and speaking in deep, unnatural voices.
These incidents reportedly led to multiple visits from child services, police officers, and even a priest, who performed multiple exorcisms on Latoya and her children.
The case became well-known after being reported by The Indianapolis Star in 2014, which brought it to the national spotlight.
The story’s chilling details and the involvement of various professionals who corroborated some of the strange occurrences made it one of the most famous cases of alleged demonic possession in recent years.
Yeah I think I know what he was trying to say but using that phrase is crazy????. Especially since he was lowkey dragging that type of white mom in the movie????. It’s not like he made her character some type of white savior. It was the exact opposite imo
