Good as freakin hell! Periodt!
That’s the best way to describe Lizzo’s entire look at the 2023 Grammy Awards (and we’re still not doing it justice). She effin’ slayed and left no crumbs!
The About Damn Time Grammy winner walked the red carpet in a full coral ensemble, including a floor-grazing Opera cape covered head-to-toe in flowers. You’d think an internet-breaking ensemble like that would be enough, but not for Lizzo…it’s just not in her DNA.
When she shed the cape’s hood, Lizzo revealed a show-stopping set of wet, side-swept curls with a single lock cascading down her forehead.
“Creating this look for Lizzo’s red carpet look was a love affair! Lizzo’s look was inspired by the intricate beauty and detail of the flowers that illuminated her face and the vibrant color of her beautiful gown,” Shelby Swain, Lizzo’s longtime hairstylist, informed The Root.
“I wanted to create a romantic, elegant hairstyle that complimented her bold beauty!”

To achieve this jaw-dropping look, Swain (famously nicknamed the Beyoncé of baby hair) revealed that she relied on Sebastian’s Professional Dark Oil Lightweight Shampoo ($20) and Dark Oil Conditioner ($21) to give her the perfect foundation to create movement. The dark oil element, infused with a healthy blend of oils like argan and jojoba, added a stunning luster.
“Creating and styling textured hair has its own set of rules,” Swain said. “I love working with products that allow for versatile styling and also keep the hair healthy.”
Swain then used Harry Josh Pro Tools Cordless Styling Iron ($350) “to create a free-flowing shape” and then added some sexy definition using the Ceramic Cordless Curling Wand ($325).
She placed “the sweet, finishing curl and sprayed it for a moldable finish and humidity protection” with the Sebastian Professional Shaper Hairspray ($23). She finished the process with Shaper Plus Hairspray ($23), which held everything in place and gave Lizzo a fierce, fiery look.
Regarding Lizzo’s stage look, Ms. Swain went for a fun, chin-length bob that held up while she held court during her world-stopping performance.
“For Lizzo’s performance look, I wanted to give her a look that would move, bounce and radiate as she does on stage. We opted for a bob that would complement her face, and then we went in for the wet sophisticated simplicity of lush curls,” Swain said.
The renowned stylist revealed that she reached for the Sebastian Professional Mousse Forte ($20) to mold Lizzo’s locks while the Sebastian Professional Gel Forte ($20) helped her define those luscious curls that, despite everything, held their own throughout the performance.
Of course, the Exactly How I Feel singer’s makeup was breathtaking, too! Her glam squad pro, Alex Mayo, went for a “flushed, diffused cherry cheeks” look to add dimension to Lizzo’s powerful ethereal vibe.
He used Charlotte Tilbury’s Pillow Talk Matte Beauty Blush Wand in Dream Pop ($42), brushing into Lizzo’s eyes for an extra pop. Still, our favorite detail was the eye-catching butterfly-shaped lashes – which resulted from using Velour Beauty’s scandalous Sinful Lashes ($14) and whispy Soulmate Falsies Set ($26).
Talk about a Juicy look!
