According to ABC News, Sheriff Leon Lott announced the arrest of a man who is charged with murder.
Officials say Kenardo Bates, 31, has been charged with murder, kidnapping, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
Bates is accused of murdering 29-year-old Jaylan Hasty.
The Columbia-Richland Fire Department responded to a water leak alarm at an apartment located in the 1300 block of North Brickyard Road.
Upon entering the apartment, they discovered a man and a woman who had sustained gunshot wounds.
Tragically, the woman was declared dead at the scene, while the man was urgently transported to the hospital with severe injuries.
Investigators also retrieved a firearm from the man’s possession.
The family of Hasty taking the news of Bates release, from the hospital to jail, hard.
“I try so hard not to hate Kenardo, but every time I talk to someone different I hear something I don’t want to hear,” said mother of Jayland Hasty, Monica Hatton Tatum.
Tatum expressed the feelings she has for what her daughter’s ex-boyfriend bates did to her daughter.
“it’s just so hard because my family loved this man and he had just gotten a job and my son had just gotten him a job with the company he worked for,” said Tatum.
Bates had been in the hospital since Aug. 24 and was released on Sep. 1, the same day Hasty was laid to rest.
He is now being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
Authorities say Hasty and Bates had a romantic relationship at one point and the shooting appears to be due to domestic violence.
The family says the two had been separated for a year prior to the incident.
“She was ending the relationship.. I kept telling her all she had to do was co-parent,” said Tatum.
Investigators are looking into the circumstances surrounding this incident. Initial investigation appears to show that the situation was the result of domestic violence as the suspect and victim had a romantic relationship.
“If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, please let us help you,” Sheriff Leon Lott said. “We have a team of compassionate Victims Assistance advocates to help you.”
“Neighbors saying he would stalk her, how we would sit in the parking lot, he would wait for her to come home and they would watch him,” said Private Investigator, Chandra Cleveland.
