Man Who Leapt At Judge In Las Vegas Courtroom Sentenced To Serve Up To 65 Years In Prison
Deobra Redden, the man who assaulted 62-year-old Las Vegas District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus in January, knocking her into a wall, has been sentenced to serve 26 to 65 years in prison, KTNV reports.
Redden, 31, was in Clark County District Court on January 3rd to be sentenced on an attempted battery charge when he leapt towards Judge Holthus.
Holthus fell back as Redden flung himself over the bench and grabbed her hair. The judge did suffer some minor injuries, but she wasn’t hospitalized.
The viral incident was captured on video.

Redden pleaded guilty to six of the charges but pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to an attempted murder charge.
At his sentencing Tuesday (December 10th), Redden addressed the court, saying, “I’m not making excuses for my actions, but I’m saying I’m not a bad person, not an evil person, and I know that I did not intend to kill Mary Kay Holthus.”
His attorney, Carl Arnold, said in a statement after the plea that his client’s deal with prosecutors “reflects a delicate balance between accepting responsibility for a regrettable incident and recognizing the impact of Mr. Redden’s untreated mental illness at the time.”
Redden was reportedly diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
According to NBC News, Redden was allegedly serving prison time for other felony battery convictions when he pleaded guilty.
He also pleaded guilty to battery of a protected person aged 60 or older, resulting in substantial bodily harm, intimidating a public officer, and battery by a prisoner.
KLAS-TV reported that Redden will be eligible for parole after 2050.
