The Martin cast reunited at this year’s Emmy Awards, and seeing Martin Lawrence and co was one of the awards show’s highlights.
Well, if you’re a Martin fan, it gets better.
According to Deadline, Martin Lawrence is working on Young Martin, an upcoming hourlong drama series.
The Bad Boys star is working on the show through his production company, RunTelDat and Marvin Peart’s WonderHill Studios.
What Will Martin Lawrence’s Young Martin Focus On?
Young Martin will be a contemporary origin story following Martin Payne, a charismatic teen navigating through the complexities of turning into an adult.
The show will navigate themes of life, friendship and family.
Martin’s magnetic personality and quick wit will draw him into unique situations he has to overcome.
WonderHill CEO Marvin Peart was delighted to bring the show to life.
“Out of all the hit shows during the 90’s, there was only one Martin — a show that defined culture and positivity. Martin reflected a real group of friends from our community that wound up on TV screens all over the world. I respected and revered Martin Lawrence for creating Martin Payne and what he did for African Americans on television in front and behind the camera. In many ways, he influenced my path in the entertainment industry and it’s an honor to partner with Martin and his younger self and share him with the next generation of fans.”
During Martin’s five-season run, it won multiple People’s Choice and NAACPY Image awards.
A 30th anniversary reunion special aired in 2022 on BET+, with special performances from Brian McKnight and Snoop Dogg.
At the 75th Emmy Awards, Martin was recognized alongside other hit TV shows, such as The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, Ally McBeal, and Grey’s Anatomy.
Martin Lawrence currently stars in one of the summer’s hottest blockbusters, Bad Boys: Ride or Die.
The movie’s success has taken the franchise’s box office earnings past $1.2 billion–not bad for a Black-led movie franchise.
