Black Owned Online Store Sells School Supplies Dedicated To Black Culture

This black-owned online store sells school supplies dedicated to representing black culture. In the spirit of buying black-owned, I came across this awesome website that sells school supplies that have a pretty “Unique” feel to it.

The notebooks celebrate black culture and millennial culture and I think they are super cute! Check out the view:

About the company Innovative Supplies and CEO:

The owner is Nneka and she is a single mother to a beautiful daughter and we had a chance to chat a little bit about her store and goals:

Online Store Sells School Supplies- From her website

I just recently left the military last month, after 9 years of service and two overseas deployments. I am starting a fresh, new chapter in my life.

This fall I am attending college. I will study to become a history teacher in my local area. I am about making a positive change in my community.

This is one step towards that. I want to use this platform and this site as a way to reach out to the millennials who want variety, and who want to be apart of a bigger cause.

The goals of Innovative Supplies are:

  • Open and deposit profits into an account with black-owned Citizens Trust Bank.
  • Donate 40% of all profits made from book bag sales to local charities.
  • Provide quality products.
  • Hire local minority youth.
  • Support other small businesses
  • Use economically sourced materials
  • Use environmentally friendly packaging

Online Store Sells School Supplies- Editor update:

We have had a ton of comments and emails regarding the status of the notebooks and we have since been in contact with Nneka (the owner) via phone.

To say she was overwhelmed with all the love and support is an understatement, she sold out within 24 hours and if that isn’t a win for a small business, I do not know what is.

Nneka has over 8000 orders to fill and has hired local youth in her area to help bind and ship all of the orders she has received. (Yes every single notebook is made by hand) She is planning to reopen the store next week with tentative dates of August 5th or 6th, we hope you will still support her once the store is fully stocked again.

Thank you all for supporting her, after talking to so many of you, teachers, coaches, grandmothers, moms, and fathers it reminds me of how invested we all are in seeing our children represented positively.

Brandon she is saying that our daughters need to see that we are beautiful enough to be on a notebook, magazine etc. I grew up with white dolls and at one point I thought that white was the best because my people weren’t doll’s. I understand and she is right we have to show our girls that we are perfectly beautiful. Nothing against anyone else.

It’s not that they can only relate to their own kind, but it’s so nice to have an option to purchase something that looks like you, and not always like who you are not…it’s very few Caucasian kids that play with black dolls unless they are famous athletes, because they do not relate to it.. There should items to purchase of all races to self identify with,; Latino, Indian, Mexican, African , the world is not just made up of white, but when you go to the big chain stores guess what that’s all that’s there,!

What’s sad is that that is what you took from what she said. We are bombarded with the blond hair blue eyed standard of beauty. Part of our culture and beauty needs to be seen by OUR children so that they will know that they are beautiful too. If you cannot understand that, then either you are not black or an ignorant black person. Buy a clue!

That sounds like privilege speaking, Brandon. We have all had to adjust to relating to white girls and boys. Representation is key to identity, though. I grew up feeling a stronger connection to Kevin Arnold on The Wonder Years than any other character on television because there were no brown girls. This is an important pursuit and if you’re only here to troll, stand down.

It’s sad that you can’t see what the effects of being told overtly and covertly you’re not good enough would have on people. The images you see probably resemble you. You wouldn’t see how someone not being represented could affect them. You need to open your mind before you open your mouth .

        Dear misguided person:
It’s not that African American children can only “relate” to people who look like them. To the contrary. They are forced to identify with this society’s identification of beauty, which for the majority of America translates into a blonde hair blue eyed person. So I think it’s YOU who has been brought up in a small world. The sad part is that you don’t recognize your own shortcomings and how your inability to allow Black people to pick up a notebook that looks like them without having judgement passed on them is the epitome of SAD!!

I don’t feel as if my children were FORCED to see blonde barbies as what is acceptable. I made sure they knew who they were and where they came from. No one can force things on someone unless you allow them to do that. I believe it’s all in the teaching toward your children, to one not make it about race. It’s not about my child being black or your child being white, it’s about coming together despite those and not create more of a divide in this country than there already is

@Brandon I find your comment comical. Your comment epitomizes racial ignorance. For years white children have been featured in toy commercials, on cereal boxes,in magazine ads and on and on. Once upon a time there was no such thing as even a black doll. You know whats funny about that?? I’ll tell you. White society only related to “their own kind”. Which created a very small world of white privilege and entitlement. Now that positive ethnic products are being produce to celebrate the African American Culture your response is “Your daughters can only relate to their kind”. Your comment is the very definition of ignorance. A young black mother created a line of positive ethnic products to celebrate the uniqueness and intelligence of young black girls and your response is an ignorant comment. Would you rather she be on food stamps? Let me play psychologist for a moment. Your not concerned about our daughter’s abilities to adapt to world culture. You are appalled that a young black women has the audacity to produce a product that is targeted to appeal to a specific audience. That is called business and marketing. Contrary to your comment that our daughter’s world must be very small. These products include them in a world that is their’s to explore. Celebrating their heritage while encouraging positive thinking and images. On the other hand Brandon or what ever your name is you just gave an example of how small your intellectual intelligence is.

Perhaps you should broaden your worldview and that of your own children by buying your daughters some of these wonderful items to use. They’ll love you for it.

Actually it is a very sad world that we all live in. Our world is Eurocentric. To see something else is refreshing and it has been proven by educators that when a child sees themselves , as they are, in literature, media and the arts, they will be more successful in all areas of their life. The life of a white person is not universal….sorry. Additionally , it is you who lives in a small world. Your inability to see that your experiences are not universal is indicative of the small world you were brought up in. Racism and cultural hegemony are real most of the world has accepted these facts. You sound like the people who still the world is flat.

Just to give you a different perspective, I didn’t read it like that Brandon. A hefty majority of images, dolls, etc. do not look like what her children look like. She shouldn’t have to defend attacks against such a simple desire for her kids to be seen as normal & NOT the constant exception. Maybe walk a mile in her shoes before attacking her parenthood.

Hello everyone. This is a great idea and I am so inclined to buy some products for my family members who are of mixed race. It’s long overdue. I have only one comment to make that may be construed as negative. In the design which includes the beautiful face of Dr. Martin Luther King why must there be a stern white cop behind him? To me it changes the tone of the message to include hatred for white cops. I know the subject is current and viable. But these are children. Through the eyes and minds of children we can change the world. Why not just have MLK as the guideline to emulate? I sincerely love the designs but don’t like the subliminal message behind this one.

You must be white. A black mother shows excitement that these images are someone her daughters can relate to and you incorrectly assume that it means she’s raising them in a small world. Its insanity to expect a child if any hue to be inundated with images from other ethnic groups without seeing anyone who resembles them…it affects their self-esteem. This was the basis for the decision in Brown v. Board of Education. Why are you even on this page?

Please take a seat sir, your ass is showing.
This is a wonderful idea. We don’t have the privilege to have much made in our image and so these small victories speak volumes. They wouldn’t have to if this country’s bias and ongoing (not so hidden) agenda didn’t make equality a dream deferred.

Brandon you might not understand the need for a black child to see images that look like him/her in a positive light but it’s helpful. I see lots of notebooks in stores right now, some with people on them but none of them represent my self or my children. How sad is it that we live in a world where in the year 2016, in order to get a notebook that features someone who looks like your child you have to go online and have it specially made?. I would rather have my daughter stare at this notebook and admire it and wish to have this fierce, strong looking girls hair for instance because that is attainable for her and that’s reinforcing that what she already has is beautiful. Should I rather her look at a girl that is thought to be beautiful even if none of the things that make her beautiful resemble my child? Or maybe I should perm her hair so that she can reach the level of beauty that we see in stores and on magazines and on tv every day. Brandon, if you are not familiar with the struggle and have never dug deeper than what your history books have taught to understand why we must reinforce that everything about being black is awesome than you might just want to keep your opinion to your self. How many of these beautiful notebooks and backpacks did you buy while you were here reading comments?
Sis, please get your stock up soon. Your notebooks and supplies are beautiful and I want some for my daughter who is starting school this year.

I think you are overthinking it. Statistically whether white or Black people respond better to a message when the person saying the message looks like them. For example an effective white teacher can still have impact but a Black effective teacher can make an even more lasting impact. It’s not a bit about color but most inportantly seeing someone of authority who looks like you. I can rant on and on but the point of this business is to empower and reaffirm Black children who time and time again barely see people who look like them in a position of power and authority. And no I am not talking about rappers and athletes. I am talkin about your average Joe.

Brandon, It’s more about bringing up a child in a culture or environment that doesn’t value their beauty. Unfortunately, self-esteem is given a huge blow when what you look like is not the glorified standard.

Where in the good ol’ USA have people of color been positively displayed continuously on as many billboards, commercials,TV shows and magazine ads , etc., as any other color?
Yeah, that’s happens to be a small world. We have different needs spiritually and culturally. Knowing and seeing people who we can relate to in a good place helps with the development of the mind and goals of an individual.
A Dad who works can cause his children to develop good work ethic and be the example in the home concerning needed guidance of all I mentioned above.
Not seeing anything like yourself in a good light, especially after hearing hate-filled slander all your life can create a dim picture for a person. We are people too , we are clearly different as well as other cultures are. We deserve to know , display and be proud of us too.

Until you walk in someone else’s shoes, you will have no idea what their experience is like. You never had your daughter despise herself because her hair isn’t straight or the society she lives in doesn’t celebrate her beauty. For self esteem purposes children of color must have relatable images of themselves. White people are privileged to see that. No hate just truth.

She dont live in a small world she live in a racist country called Amerikkka who post white images everywhere so thats all our kids see, and post derogatory images of people who resembles them. But you wouldn’t understand cause you dont have that problem some whites say black lives matter is racist cause all lives matter, we know Amerikkka has shown how much white lives matter. We just trying to matter Amerikkka realize that our life matter too but you wouldn’t understand…….

Brandon, its very unfortunate that you don’t have a deeper understanding of what a young child or color would go through in western society that devalues dark hair/eyes/skin and promotes white beauty standards. It’s important for a child to appreciate their own features whether they are white or black. My parents were extremely aware of this and made sure I watched TV shows and had dolls that looked like me to play with and I can definitely say the I believe that their smart efforts allowed for me to grow up with a healthy self-identity. My cousins who didn’t have this support from their parent’s wished that they could be white and were mentally affected by the idea that only blonde hair.. white skin, and blue eyes could be valuable/beautiful.

Brandon, what an ignorant thing to say. My husband and I adopted a beautiful brown girl. I would LOVE to see more things in this world that look like her. Don’t get me started on the American Girl movies! You have never had to experience this in your life, so I completely understand why you would say something like that. But, please try and put yourself in another’s perspective. Don’t be part of the problem.

Yes, I’m white and am saddened there is not more diversity and representation for you in children’s books and toys and in all aspects of society. My white friend was looking to buy an empowering black female book series for her black friend’s little girl and could not find anything at any bookstores- I guess they don’t exist… Hope that changes soon.

My daughter is a junior high school counselor .She told me that this was a really great idea and product.. This product was recommended by her in the school system. She lead a group to empower higher self esteem and educate young girls for their school. With the way society has been for years. It’s really important that children have someone or something they can identify with that makes them feel confident and good about themselves. Maybe we don’t always word our comments perfectly but Tierra you’re definitely right.

Its her business. If your an educator your heart should bw open. Not thinking like the other man. I’ve worst things than this being sold. If you don’t like what it says don’t buy or read. We are in a free country. Refusing to be stopped or not go forward because of the other man. Think positive not negative. Thats what’s wrong with the world today. Even when it comes down to the educators. So glad my last child goes to private school.

Especially now after seeing so many say that everything is sold out… I cannot wait to see what other designs she comes out with. I’d definitely love to see things geared towards little boys as well in the future … I’m proud of her and I don’t even personally know her. You Go Nneka!

Why do we need any school supplies that celebrate or promote any culture over another for our daughters? If you walk around most cities in America, you will see people wearing many different styles (hair, clothes, etc.) and they will have varying levels of melanin in their skin. Their experiences will give them more familiarity with some things over others and make them admirable by others who relate to many of the same or similar experiences or desired opportunities. Our daughters need to see us celebrating each other and how, although our life paths and experiences vary, there are always key things that bind us all. We all have good and bad days, aches/ pains, successes/ failures, beautiful/ graceful, and ugly/ not as wonderful spots in our lives. As a culture of American’s and especially mom’s, we should start a movement that encourages our daughters to see things as humans with unique experiences that should be valued and appreciated for how we wish or do not wish to live our lives. I want my daughter to grow up and see the people around her as humams with feelings, wants/ needs, and dreams just like her. At the end of the day, we all have knees, elbows, noses, etc. that work the same way. Let’s push to have school supplies that show what we truly see and want for our young… Confidence in our capabilities, compassion for each other, and appreciation for the experiences of others that gives us knowledge to more successfully navigate the hurdles life brings our way.

Thank you for joining our court of public opinion and we graciously accept your point of view but I think we often get confused with respect to celebrating a culture thinking that it automatically means other cultures are below or ‘less than’. Having a notebook with a little black girl on it, doing a science experiment or another with social media rhetoric does not mean that the child doesn’t also carry notebooks with her favourite cosplay characters or Marvel superheroes. America calls for an appreciation of diversity but there is less representation for little girls of color in comparison to others. This is a way to add to that diversity so that everyone is fairly represented. Then my daughter can run down a stack of notebooks and say…hey mom I love this one because this cartoon looks like me, and mommy i want this one because I enjoyed watching Peppa Pig this Summer and mommy can I have this one with the new Hispanic Disney Princess on it. The point is she will be taught diversity that is also inclusive of who she is!

Little black girls don’t need a notebook cover to show them that they can indeed become a scientist or be an original person…or whatever…if a child is watching and aware and if they have parents who teach them that they can be whatever they want, regardless of color, gender, ability, etc….then they will do just that…besides, there are millions of different notebook covers and other items already in production that feature people of all different backgrounds….this is not 1970…things are changing rapidly anyway; i see it, don’t you?…these notebooks are ridiculously unnecessary
