Pharrell’s upcoming musical is assembling a star-studded cast, featuring some of Hollywood’s finest talents. According to Deadline, the latest to join the project are Quinta Brunson and Anderson .Paak.
Halle Bailey was initially announced as the lead for the currently untitled film, following Pharrell’s casting call for the role. Since then, the musical has attracted a host of other musicians and actors.
The cast now includes Kelvin Harrison Jr., Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Missy Elliott, Janelle Monáe, Tim Meadows, Jaboukie Young-White, Jamilah Rosemond, and Jayson Lee.
Directed by Michel Gondry, the effort is described as a coming-of-age musical inspired by Pharrell Williams‘ time in Atlantis Apartments where he grew up.
The story takes place in Virginia Beach in the summer of 1977.
Williams and Mimi Valdés are producing the film through i am OTHER, with Gil Netter producing via Gil Netter Productions. The script is penned by Martin Hynes and Steven Levenson.
Ryan Jones, Universal Picture’s Senior Vice President of Production Development, and Christine Sun, Director of Production Development, are supervising the project for the studio.
The ensemble cast is just one aspect of bringing Skateboard P’s origin story to life.
This fall, Legos and Focus Features are releasing a biopic centered around Pharrell, featuring Legos prominently. Titled Piece By Piece, the film is slated for an October 2024 release in theaters.
