Chrystul Kizer, who confessed to killing Randall Volar III, a man she claimed had trafficked her when she was a teenager, has been sentenced to 11 years in prison.
Kizer, now 24, received her sentence on Monday, along with five years of supervised release, as confirmed by court documents obtained by NBC News.
She reportedly first encountered Volar, 34, at the age of 16 and alleged that he sexually abused her on multiple occasions.
In 2018, Kizer admitted to shooting Volar and then setting his body on fire. Prosecutors also stated that she took his BMW afterward.
Initially charged with first-degree intentional homicide, Kizer argued self-defense in 2022, citing a Wisconsin law that permits trafficking victims to claim “an affirmative defense for any offense committed as a direct result” of their trafficking.
By pleading guilty to a lesser charge in May, she avoided a possible life sentence and a trial.
The Associated Press reported that Kizer was credited with 570 days, or approximately a year and a half, of time already served.
A judge denied her participation in any early release programs offered by the Department of Corrections, and she is expected to be released in 2023.
According to COMPLEX Kizer was originally released from prison in 2020 on a $400,000 bond, which was raised by supporters who followed her case.
However, she found herself in hot water when she was charged with disorderly conduct after an incident at her Milwaukee home in January, according to Wisconsin Public Radio.
She was arrested in Louisiana the following month by U.S. Marshals after being on the run for nearly two weeks and was hit with five felony bail-jumping charges.
