Hold onto your seats, because Teyana Taylor just spilled the beans on her early days in the music industry.
During an interview with Angie Martinez, the singer shared how Pharrell became a father figure to her when she signed with his Star Trak Entertainment imprint at the tender age of 15.
Teyana Taylor Was Candid
According to HotNewHipHop, Taylor also revealed that she sometimes felt unprotected during her time at the label, and wished that Pharrell had fought a little harder for her.
“Also, knowing him as well as I know him, it wasn’t a thing that you did on purpose. You didn’t purposely not protect me. It might’ve been a thing where you– you know, he’s so gentle and letting everybody push him out the way. And I guess for me, that 15-year-old, that girl just needed you to fight a little harder. You know what I’m saying?”
Fans were quick to react to the candid interview, with one user suggesting that the two should have a private chat to clear the air.
Let’s give credit where it’s due, though.
Teyana Taylor was clear she still holds Pharrell in high regard and understands he had her best interests at heart.
“No matter how I felt when I was younger, like, none of these doors would’ve ever opened if it wasn’t for P. With him, it’s why I hold him on such a high pedestal. Because I didn’t have a dad, you know what I’m saying?”
Even gentle giants like Pharrell need a little nudge to stand up for those they care about.
Unfortunately, feeling unprotected is an all-too-common experience for Black women, regardless of who’s in their corner.
So, props to Teyana Taylor for speaking her truth and shedding light on an important issue.
