Tiffany Haddish, is trying to make her dream a reality.
She has raised $25 million to build Diaspora Groceries, an alternative and affordable food market.
The market is located in the Crenshaw neighborhood of Los Angeles.
This predominantly Black neighborhood has been home to notable figures like Nipsey Hussle and Ice-T.
Haddish recently revealed her deep commitment to this project.
She is currently starring in a Disney film and was quoted saying:
“I’ve always dreamed of being in a Disney movie, and this is the biggest movie I’ve ever been in,”
Tiffany Haddish told the Post.
“But it’s not as important as the grocery store. I don’t know if movies change people’s lives.”
The market is dedicated to serving BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) individuals.
She continued:
“There will be specialty things and a normal market and a nonprofit-like educational component, where people can take cooking and financial literacy classes.”
The actor’s motivation stems from her belief that understanding how money and food work can lead to healthier and happier lives.
“I’m a firm believer that once you understand how money works, once you understand how food works, you become a healthier, happier human being. And when you’re healthier and happier, the family’s healthier and happier, and the community’s healthier and happier.”
Tiffany Haddish’s Personal Experiences Have Also Played A Role In This Venture
The comedian grew up as a foster child and dealt with food insecurity.
These experiences inform her decision and determination to make a positive impact.
While Tiffany Haddish has achieved success in the entertainment industry, she recognizes the importance of addressing food insecurity.
She notes:
“Food insecurity is a real thing for me. Something I’ve experienced the majority of my existence. I would say the last five years have been more like, ‘this is what I’m going to eat.”
The launch date for Diaspora Groceries has not been announced yet.
Still, it’s clear that the actor’s vision is fueled by a desire to make a lasting difference in her community.
She wishes to address the real challenges many people face in accessing quality food.
