The fall and winter months are a real bittersweet time for those of us who wear makeup.
On one hand, we don’t have to worry about sweating off our lipstick and foundation or having a million different products layered on our faces while the sun is mercilessly blaring on us all day long.
On the other hand, the struggle is real with dry, ashy, and chapped skin. What’s a girl to do?
Well since every season seems to come with its own special flavor of problematic, we do the only thing we know how to do—find a solution!
Try these two tricks to keep your makeup from looking dull and ashy this fall And winter season.
Mix a hydrating primer with your foundation.
Keeping your skin looking soft, supple, and hydrated takes more than just boosting the number of humectants in your skincare routine.
You have to find makeup products that won’t dry you out, as well. Since fall and winter tend to be the seasons where you go for more bold, matte looks on your lips and eyes, try to go for a more dewy, skin-like foundation routine to bring more balance to your overall look.
Mix a good hydrating primer with your favorite foundation. Not only will it infuse both your foundation and skin with some much-need hydration, but it will give you a natural, lightweight glow that’ll last all day.

Try a steam + moisturizer combo.
Moisturizing before you apply makeup is a must no matter what season we’re in, but it’s especially important during fall and winter due to dryer and cooler weather conditions.
The quality of your makeup will always come down to how much effort you put into prepping your skin and if you don’t moisturize beforehand, you run the risk of looking dull and lifeless.
To spruce up your regular routine and avoid ashy foundation, try implementing steam in your regimen.
Steam is obviously very hydrating for your skin, but it also helps your skin absorb products much better which means your foundation has a chance to have a smooth, undetectable finish when you add a little steam to the mix. You can do this in two ways:
- Apply moisturizer to your face before you get in the shower and allow it to absorb in your skin.
- Use a facial steamer right before you moisturize and apply makeup.
