Today I had a question from one of you about braid sprays for box braids and I thought why not use the opportunity to share some recipes since I have not done anything like this on the blog.
If you choose to protective style with box braids or any style that might cover your hair completely then you already know the importance of keeping your moisturized and strong.
With those two goals in mind I have two recipes, one for when your hair and braids are feeling particularly dry and another to keep your hair super strong as well as moisturized.
Starting with the moisturizer I have to say I have a huge love for aloe vera juice because it’s filled with vitamins and minerals and known to moisturize the hair better than any liquid leave in you can find on the market.
Glycerin is a great humectant and also a fan favorite when it comes to moisturizing hair. Added to those two I would also recommend an essential oil (I like Tea Tree) and good ole water.
Hair Moisturizer
Ingredients:
2 parts Aloe Vera Juice
1 part Vegetable Glycerine
5-6 drops of Tea Tree oil
3 parts water
The reason I do not give exact measurements is that I am more of an eyeball person so just know you will have more water and Aloe than you do glycerine and oil.
Hair Strengthener
This one is a bit more involved but involves and old school product that I am positive most of you know about. The protein in the formula is what will strengthen the hair. Here is the recipe:
Ingredients:
1 part vegetable glycerine
1 part Infusium 23 leave in
3 parts water
2-3 drops hydrolyzed protein (optional)
5-8 drops Sandalwood essential oil
For both recipes just pour the ingredients into two separate spray bottles, shake well and label each of them so you know which is which.
By the way, if you want to know which to use after the gym or training, I would recommend the Hair strengthener because it has protein in it and it also is a great moisturizer. Not to mention the Sandalwood essential oil is a natural astringent and antiseptic great for after workout.
