Virginia Giuffre, the woman who accused the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and Prince Andrew of sexual abuse, has died by suicide, her family announced.
Giuffre died on Thursday (April 24) at her home in Neergabby, Australia. She was 41.
Western Australia Police Force media liaison officer Shelby Brady confirmed emergency services found Giuffre unresponsive in her home on Friday night. First aid was administered, but she was declared deceased at the scene.
According to authorities, “early indications are that the death is not suspicious,” and Major Crimes detectives are investigating, the BBC reported.
“It is with utterly broken hearts that we announce that Virginia passed away last night at her farm in Western Australia,” the 41-year-old’s family said in a statement to People.
“She lost her life to suicide, after being a lifelong victim of sexual abuse and sex trafficking.”
Giuffre had long been outspoken about the abuse she endured at the hands of billionaire financier Jeffrey Epstein and his powerful associates when she was just 16 years old.
She claimed that Epstein’s ex-associate and convicted madam, Ghislaine Maxwell, recruited, groomed, and forced her to have sex with Epstein and others as part of a wide-reaching sex trafficking operation, which she escaped in 2002.
Giuffre also accused Epstein and Maxwell of trafficking her to influential men, including Prince Andrew, who has repeatedly denied the allegations but settled out of court with his accuser for $12 million in 2022.
“Virginia was a fierce warrior in the fight against sexual abuse and sex trafficking. She was the light that lifted so many survivors. Despite all the adversity she faced in her life, she shone so bright. She will be missed beyond measure. The light of her life were her children Christian, Noah, and Emily,” the family continued.
“It was when she held her newborn daughter in her arms that Virginia realized she had to fight back against those who had abused her and so many others. She was heroic and will always be remembered for her incredible courage and loving spirit.”
“In the end, the toll of abuse is so heavy that it became unbearable for Virginia to handle its weight. We know that she is with the angels.”
Giuffre’s death comes after a heartbreaking start to 2025. On March 30, the 41-year-old, who had been living with her young family in Australia, made headlines after posting a photo of her bruised face on Instagram, claiming she had been struck by a bus and had “four days to live.”
“I’ve gone into kidney renal failure,” she wrote with a photo of herself lying in a hospital bed, her face covered in bruises. “They’ve given me four days to live, transferring me to a specialist hospital in urology.”
“This has been the worst start to a new year,” she added. “I’m ready to go, just not until I see my babies one last time, but you know what they say about wishes.”
Days later, Giuffre revealed she had suffered years of physical abuse at the hands of her husband of 22 years, Robert Giuffre. According to The Independent, Robert recently violated a restraining order Giuffre had taken out against him in their home city of Perth.
“I was able to fight back against Ghislaine Maxwell and Jeffrey Epstein who, abused and trafficked me,” Giuffre said in a statement to People Magazine.
“But I was unable to escape the domestic violence in my marriage until recently. After my husband’s latest physical assault, I can no longer stay silent.”
A spokesperson for Giuffre confirmed that she reported an alleged assault on January 9, 2025, in Dunsborough, Western Australia. However, local authorities did not charge Robert with any crime.
“Unfortunately, as the issues you raise are before the Courts in Australia both he and anyone associated with the case including Ms. Giuffre or her agents are prohibited from discussing or utilizing the media. Therefore, there is no comment,” Robert’s attorney emailed People.
Giuffre’s brother, Sky Roberts, and his wife Amanda revealed the 41-year-old had been having marital issues for a while and separated from Robert – the father of her three children, ages 19, 16 and 15 — sometime around August 2023.
May she rest in peace.
