Why I Am Here For The Lemonade Syllabus. Recently I read an article alluding to the fact that it is a sad state of affairs when as a community many of the kids from all walks of life and from all races have no idea about the cultural references in Beyonce’s Lemonade.
Yes! we are still talking about this and I cannot say I disagree. As we have all settled down on what Lemonade is about and have been distracted by tales of “Beckys” and incompetent “Daddies” what else can extract from the project?
The Lemonade Syllabus all came to fruition on Twitter with the hashtag #lemondaesyllabus started by writer and PH.d. Student Candice Benbow.
According to The Daily Dot, Benbow put out a call “for black women to share ‘the works of art, history, and literature that came to mind or informed their reading of the visual album.’” Over 200 suggestions and counting have come in, and Benbow has gathered 200 into a free PDF workbook at Diaspora Hypertext where you can check your reading off the list as you go, and have plenty of room for notes.
Here is the thing, while we are all rocking to the beat of Formation and giving dab to Beyonce’s pure rawness in her album there is no doubt that she reached the young impressionable minds and before they get lost in just the “hot sauce” this is a teaching moment that we just cannot miss.
Benbow said that after the visuals of Beyonce’s 6th album debuted she received calls from friends asking for literary material that would help them better understand the project.
She said after the fourth call:
“I made it as a love offering to Black women… Showing sisters that we see each other and we love each other,” she said. It became much more than just explaining Lemonade, it became a catalog of Black womanhood of the past present and future.” she said.
Since then the syllabus has gone viral with celebrities and educators giving her a nod at the collection.
“educators from all levels of education who have said ‘I’m using your Lemonade Syllabus,”,wherever” Benbow said.
I am overwhelmed by and excited by this resource. #LemonadeSyllabus https://t.co/X3MGdjqscI
