Zoë Kravitz is expressing regret over her “hurtful” decision to move in with rockstar dad Lenny Kravitz after her parents’ divorce at age 11.
In a recent interview with Esquire, the Blink Twice director reflected on her childhood, saying that she felt she didn’t fully appreciate her mom, Lisa Bonet’s, parenting style. Lisa Bonet laid out some pretty strict rules.
“I think it was very hurtful that I moved away from her to be with my dad and my dad wasn’t even there,” Kravitz told the outlet. “I just wish I had been able to appreciate what she was doing for me.”
“She was so focused on preserving my innocence. My creativity. Because she knew what the world is — that you don’t get that back,” she recalled, adding that she now understands her mom’s point of view.

The Batman star’s famous parents, Hollywood actress Lisa Bonet and Grammy award-winning artist Lenny Kravitz, were married from 1987 to 1993.
Kravitz lived with her mom for the first decade of her life before choosing to move across the country to live with her dad in Miami, who she’d only seen a few times a year.
She remembered his visits as being like stepping into a completely different universe.
“It was this whirlwind of a completely different universe,” she said of his visits. Lenny was living boldly and with zero regrets.
“It was intoxicating. And then I would go home to this really quiet, really simple life,” she added.

When she moved to Miami, life was suddenly wonderful, euphoric but with her dad’s minimal presence, Kravitz was forced to grow up faster than other kids her age.
“It wasn’t that my dad didn’t care,” she said. “He just cared about different things.”
“Just like it happens in the movies,” she continued, “it’s like, ‘Oh, you think this is perfect? You think this is great? Guess what comes with this.’”
The High Infidelity actress ultimately convinced her dad to relocate to New York. Florida wasn’t working. But she felt that Manhattan would. She was right.
“It was weirdos like me,” she said. “I wasn’t like some genius actress.” She just fit in. “I felt safe.”
