2023 is already looking up for women in media and film.
Over the weekend, Catherine Kamau, popularly known as Kate Actress, flew the Kenyan flag high after being crowned Africa’s Best Female Actor of the Year at the 2022/23 Ladies In Media Awards.
The Disconnect: The Wedding Planner star beat fellow nominees Darlyn Adu Gyamfi (Ghana), Haillie Sumney (Ghana), Melissa Kiplagat (Kenya), Nambitha Ben-Mazwi (South Africa), and Temitope Olowoniyan (Nigeria).
The awards were held in Accra, Ghana.
Unfortunately, Kate could not record her acceptance speech, but she took to Instagram to share the incredible news and celebrate her beloved fans.
“Thank you so much, @ladiesinmediaaward… And to you, my peeps, Asanteni sana, this is our win,” she wrote.

Other Kenyan superwomen who racked up awards included renowned TV anchor Frida Mwaka and award-winning producer Maria Makau.
Frida bagged the Outstanding Female News Anchor of the Year at the event (which she was also hosting, while Ms. Makau clinched the Emerging Female Radio Personality Award.
“Where to begin?” Makau wrote on her Instagram.
“I am super grateful to everyone that went on to vote for me. All the reminders, the texts asking for the link, and just the love. Asante sana.”
“I thank God for strength and ability. I thank the Ladies in Media Org/Awards Africa @ladiesinmediaaward for taking recognition of my ministry and profession. This little girl is here to say thank you,” she continued.

Frida expressed her gratitude to Kenyans and her devoted Diaspora family for the recognition and overwhelming support.

Award-winning journalist and Citizen TV news anchor Victoria Rubadiri received special recognition for the impact she has made in her career, while communication guru Lizz Ntojira secured the African Female Author of the Year Award.
Other incredible women nominated for the Ladies in Media Awards included Carol Soni in the Female Influencer of the Year Category and Janet Mbugua in the Outstanding Female Humanitarian of the Year Category.
