A Family Dollar employee is reportedly facing termination after an Afro-Latino customer filmed her making racist comments about Black people.
According to Fox 26 Houston, Deon “Chico” Young was shopping at a Family Dollar store on Jensen Drive and Laura Koppe Drive in Houston when he overheard the employee allegedly telling another customer in Spanish that Black people only visit the store to steal.
Young, who is Afro-Latino and fluent in Spanish, French, and English, confronted the employee over her derogatory remarks about Black people stealing shoes in a video that quickly went viral.
In the footage, Young advised the employee to be mindful of her words because he’s Cuban and understands Spanish. He also called her out for assuming he wouldn’t pick up her remarks because he’s Black.
“Watch what you’re saying,” he told her. “Because you see me as a Black man, and you speak another language, doesn’t mean I don’t know what you’re saying.”
He added, “And that’s my whole thing. Watch what you’re saying, because you never know who understands you, and you never know who you offend.”
Young’s video garnered over 380,000 views on TikTok, prompting Family Dollar to respond.
According to Young, the company reached out to him to apologize and informed him that the employee in question would be terminated.
