BlkFam, the Whoopi Goldberg-backed streaming service, has launched.
According to Variety, the service is geared towards Black families and offers over 1,000 hours of child-friendly content.
BlkFam offers diverse experiences, hundreds of hours of original Black music, and 20 syndicated series.
It’s being called the “first and only” Black-owned, family-focused streaming platform in today’s market.
Furthermore, BlkFam is developing 10 original animated and live-action projects, all set to premiere this year.
Whoopi Goldberg Is An Equity Partner To BlkFam
Whoopi Goldberg is a “creative force” and an equity partner to the platform.
Tom Leonardis, the head of Goldberg’s Whoop Inc. production company, is also an equity partner.
The actress shared her passion for joining the service.
“I have a 10-year-old great-granddaughter and there isn’t a lot of content out there created by people who look like her, for her. I feel like we’re not always represented in the best possible way… No one has ever invited me to be part of the ground floor. And this is not even the ground floor, it’s the basement!”
Whoopi Goldberg is also excited to be part of something that will grow and even outlast her.
“I like the idea of being part of something that will grow. As I get older, I say, ‘Wow, things will outlast me.’ This is one of the things I hope outlasts me—I could be the Black woman Walt Disney!”
WarnerMedia virtuoso Larry Adams founded BlkFam, and he’s honored to have Goldberg on board.
“I’m the marketing, distribution, business guy. She’s the creative powerhouse behind this that’s going to make it really magical.”
Adams came up with BlkFam after realizing that major platforms like Netflix and Max underrepresent Black families.
He considers what they are doing “kind of like a grab bag. It really felt like you have rows and rows of black voices, but a lot of it wasn’t curated for my family.”
