Chris Brown paid a visit to Club Shay Shay and during his interview Shannon Sharpe asked him why he told Def Jam ‘no’ when they offered him a contract on the spot.
Shannon made the point that Def Jam was a great opportunity, who says no to them!?
In his usual animated demeanor Shannon says:
Def Jam!… You get, a contract offer from Def Jam …. and you turned it down… Why did you turn it down was it the numbers? What made Chris Brown ….caz this is your opportunity … THIS IS DEF JAM…this aint no no, glass of music, this is Def Jam… and they offer you a contract Chris….. and you said ..naaah I’mm good.”
Chris responds with:
I’m country, the man wouldnt talk to my mama”… so basically he wanted me to … Im not gonna say the executives name because I love him to this day …I’m never going to expose him…. But I wanted to get him on the phone with my mom….could you explain this to my mom”
At the time Chris was just 14 years old, so it is understandable that he would want a parent’s ear involved.
He goes on to say:
“I think I’m 14 at the time …I just wanted it to make sense to my mom” alluding to the fact that her word is the last word.
“I’m a mamas boy so … you gotta talk to my mama…so as soon as that happened he was like… no no no, Im good.”
Chris explained that he did not like the executives dismissal of the phone call and he thought at that time that they were trying to get over on them, so he turned them down.
Watch:
Chris who owns over 13 Burger King’s also shared that Diddy passed on him for a contract.
