Did you all know that the 25 year old beauty brand “Black Opal” was not actually black owned! This was the brand that was considered ‘inclusive’ before many of your favorites hopped on the trend of including women of color in their offerings and branding initiatives.
The thing is, even though the brand had black executives working for it, it was never black owned… until now!
Back in September Desiree Rogers who is now the CEO and Cheryl Mayberry Mckissack the new President acquired Black Opal and they intend to carry on the legacy of the brand by addressing the cosmetic needs of people of color.
This is what they shared with Allure Magazine recently:
“We were definitely fans of Black Opal and, just like many women of color, were impressed by the range of products that have been available to us for the past 25 years,” Rogers tells Allure. “Many of our makeup artist friends have used the brand for years and just love it.” Specifically, Rogers’s favorite products are the Invisible Oil Blocking Gel Primer and the Skin Perfecting Stick Foundation SPF 15 in Rich Caramel; Mayberry McKissack, she says, loves the Color Splurge Color Stick Lip in Torrid.
But just because there are already countless beloved products in the line doesn’t mean the new owners don’t have plans use the brand’s existing and growing expertise to make Black Opal even better.
“We understand the nuances of highly pigmented skin as well as its special skin needs. Skin care has always been a part of the brand’s DNA, and we will continue to look for ways to delight our consumers in caring for their skin,” Rogers tells Allure. “We want to continue to create innovative, high-quality products that are truly accessible to all women of color.”
You live and you learn! I am excited to see what Black Opal has to offer, I am sure we will be seeing some of our favorite influencers rocking with the brand very very soon!
