A grandmother from Detroit, Michigan wants answers after her daughter passed away during childbirth.
Now, the grandma has to care for all 12 of her grandchildren.
This Is A Tragedy For The Grandmother And Her Family
According to People, Pouncey’s daughter Nikita Washington went to Harper University Hospital in December while her husband was incarcerated.
She underwent a c-section on December 22, and gave birth to a healthy baby boy. Tragically, the family discovered the next day that Washington had passed away due to complications from the surgery, including a postpartum hemorrhage and complications from multiple Cesarean sections.
“I haven’t talked to anyone from the hospital. I have not received anything from them. All I have is the death certificate.” Patricia Pouncey
Pouncey is now the only one left to raise all 12 of Washington’s children, from 3 months to 19 years old.
The grandmother will fight to keep the kids together under one roof with her.
“I’m just stuck right now. I have all 12 of her kids right now with me, so I got to get a bigger house because my house is too small.”
The family’s loss highlights the importance of maternal health care in the country.
Among developed nations, the United States has the highest maternal mortality rate–and Black women are especially affected.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Black women are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than white women.
Advocates demand increased attention and resources to address this issue and improve maternal health outcomes.
