After a long wait, it’s finally official: Girls Trip 2 is happening! And best of all, the original director and main cast are all back.
The 2017 film was written by Kenya Barris and Tracy Oliver and directed by Malcom D. Lee.
It follows Ryan, who decides to reconnect with her best friends on a trip to the annual Essence Festival.
Girls Trip was a massive hit.
It earned over $140 million in the box office on a $28 million budget, it received rave reviews with some publications even considering it one of the year’s best movies, it won its fair share of awards, and it was Tiffany Haddish’s breakout role.
With all the above going for the film, a sequel was all but inevitable. And the announcement came on Good Morning America from uber-producer, Will Packer.
Packer revealed that the time is finally right for a sequel, since we can all use a post-pandemic trip. The cast and director are all in, and the only question left is what kind of trip the ladies will take next.
For a few years, the cast has wanted to make a sequel.
In 2019, Queen Latifah showed interest in making a sequel. She revealed that the whole cast was ready for it; they just needed a script. Her idea was for the girls to travel to somewhere exotic like Rio de Janeiro, or even South Africa.
In a 2020 interview, Haddish revealed that Tracy Oliver had written a treatment that was ready to go. The cast also met to brainstorm what would happen in the sequel.
The script obviously had to be polished, and let’s not forget the effect the pandemic has had on all of us, including the entertainment industry.
Girls Trip 2 is finally moving forward, and not a moment too soon.
