On Wednesday, Netflix released the trailer for its upcoming animated revival of Norman Lear’s iconic ’70s sitcom Good Times, which bears the unmistakable influence of executive producer Seth MacFarlane’s irreverent style.
The animated version, created by writer Ranada Shepard and co-produced by MacFarlane and the late Lear, centers around cab driver Reggie (J.B. Smoove), who is the grandson of John Amos’ character from the original sitcom.
Reggie and his wife Beverly (Yvette Nicole Brown) strive to make ends meet in one of Chicago’s last remaining housing projects.
They navigate life alongside their teenage artist son Junior (Jay Pharoah), activist daughter Grey (Marsai Martin), and infant son Dalvin (Gerald “Slink” Johnson), who is involved in the drug trade.
“It turns out the more things change the more they stay the same and keeping your head above water in a system with its knee on your neck is as challenging as ever,” reads the series’ official description. “The only thing tougher than life is love, but in this family, there’s more than enough to go around.”
All 10 Season 1 episodes are set to drop Friday, April 12.
“It’s a thrill to be partnering with Norman Lear and to help bring new life to his groundbreaking show Good Times,” MacFarlane enthused waaaaay back in Sept. 2020 when the project was first announced. “Animation is the ideal medium with which to reimagine the original show.”
