The whole concept of heat-styling our hair comes with a bit of a stigma. This is mostly because we’re hyper-aware of the fact that heat damage is irreversible and is oftentimes the cause of unwanted trims, hair cuts, and big chops. However, this doesn’t mean silk presses are inherently damaging!
In fact, there are really only a few ways in which silk press damage may occur. Let’s explore what they are and how you can avoid damage when getting your hair blown-out and pressed:
- Already Weak Hair. Applying heat to a head full of hair that is already struggling with dryness, breakage, or any other form of damage is a big no-no. The best thing you can do in this situation is assess your hair, bring it back to health, and then maybe consider a silk press when it’s ready.
- Improper Heat Protection. Deep conditioning your hair and treating it with sprays and moisturizers specifically formulated to protect it from heat damage is key when getting a silk press. Remember, you’re blow drying and flat ironing your hair during the process—that’s too forms of heat! So applying the proper protection beforehand is key.
- High Temps. The lower the heat, the better! If you have medium to coarse hair, you should keep all your heat styling tools between 300-395 degrees, not exceeding 400 degrees. If your hair is on the finer side, you may be able to achieve your desired look with even lower temperatures.
And one rule that matters over all others? Don’t let just anybody put their hands in your head! Make sure you properly vet your hairstylists before you commit to a silk press appointment. Make sure that both you and your stylists know how to avoid damage before you move forward.
A silk press can run anywhere from $60 to $300. That’s a wide range, right? Well, it totally depends on your stylists and what they charge based on the style you’re going for and your overall hair needs. If your hair needs a wash, trim, and style after the press, expect to pay a little more out of pocket.
On the flip side, you would expect that a silk press done at home would cost a lot less, but not exactly. Investing in a good blow dryer, flat iron, and the proper hair products may cost up to $400. However, that’s only for the initial investment. You should be smooth sailing after that!
