You’re about to hit another trip around the sun, but for some reason, even after making the twentieth “2023 resolution list,” you’re still hitting that snooze button like it’s preventing you from “wonderlanding” with Hatter and Absolem.
Your mornings are characterized by unfinished skincare routines, hurried breakfast munches, and chronic forgetfulness (you almost always forget to unplug the iron box, switch off the cooker, or prevent other disastrous, 1000-ways-to-die-like situations).
You don’t resonate with the term “morning person” and think everyone who looks well-put-together by 7 a.m. has Rumpelstiltskin connects – because why do they look like that, and you’re almost always discombobulated and overwhelmed?
What can you possibly do to get out of this miserable, anxiety-inducing state? Two words: morning routines!
Yes, for the thousandth time, you need a solid, practical, and realistic morning routine – not those fairytale “perfect” routines the internet princesses market over their socials.
You need one that’s exclusively suited to you, one that caters to your needs, your occupation, your health, and mental status, and everything in between because that’s the only you can create a morning routine that you can effortlessly adopt.
So, to help you and give you an idea of what this morning routine should look like, we compiled a list of the best morning routines for black girls – including some celebrity-approved Black girl morning routines, a chilled morning routine from our Chief Executive Officer, and some Black Girl Influencers.
Keep scrolling if you’re tired of being in a wah-wah-like slump, are looking for some motivation, or even a little commiseration…
Black Girl Celebrity Morning Routine
@Zendaya’s morning routine is a sigh of relief for those who don’t identify as “morning people.”
The Euphoria actress usually gets up around 8 a.m. She doesn’t hop right out of bed.
She’s one of us who loves to lie around or sit around, take in our surroundings, and debate for a good few minutes if she really wants to get up or try to sneak in another 10 minutes of sleep – we know how that usually goes.
She then checks her notifications and her calendar to see what the heck she’ll be doing during the day (yup, most of the time, she has no clue what she’s supposed to do).
At 9 a.m., Zendaya takes a shower (she identifies as a shower person; baths are kinda icky to her) and follows it with her skincare routine: cleanser, toner, moisturizer, and lip balm.
She finally works on her lashes (nothing makes her feel as sexy as having a nice lashes).
Zendaya isn’t much of a breakfast person (clearly, she’s not much of an anything person). It takes the intervention of her assistant to make her munch on something. When she caves, she usually has pancakes, berries, and Nutella before getting on with her schedule.
She’s not a gym person, obvi, so she goes for a more fun exercise (dancing and all that) to get her motivation juices up.
This is why we love Zendaya! We aren’t much of anything people either!
Black Girl Athlete Morning Routine
For tennis superstar @Naomi Osaka, the best morning routine starts at 8 a.m. She brushes her teeth, washes her face, and puts on SPF (KINLO Reef-Safe SPF 50+ Broad-Spectrum Golden Rays Sunscreen).
At around 9 a.m., she prepares breakfast (avocado toast with smoked salmon on normal days and coconut water, kale, kiwi, and spinach smoothie on training days).
After breakfast, Osaka does a warming-up stretch or mobility workout and then goes off to do an intensive three-hour morning practice session with her trainer. They alternate between groundstrokes, footwork drills, and cardio.
She goes to the courts for practice. While doing so, Osaka listens to music. It helps keep her focused and motivated for what’s next. She uses music to keep her anxiety at bay. The regular artists in her rotation are Beyonce, Rihanna, and Saweetie.
After training, Osaka works with her physiotherapist, Natsuko, to help with recovery. She also does a lot of stretches and uses the Hyperice Recovery Tool to do some muscle-relaxing massages.
Black Girl Millenial/Gen Z Morning Routine
This Is Us actress @Rachel Hilson goes for a more relaxed morning routine – which is in true Gen Z fashion.
She gets up by 6:30, meditates a little, and then goes on to boil some water for her favorite tea (Black-owned Nya Tea, which you can find at the Hollywood Farmer’s Market or online).
She then checks on her balcony plants – double tap if you’re a balcony plant mama!
She takes in some sun and goes on with her day, which might involve some gym time or creativity routines!
Best Morning Routine For Black Girls Over 50
Someone said the best morning routine for Black women over 50 is to sit and enjoy the fruits of their youth toil.
But for @Oprah Winfrey, the Queen of TV, the best morning routine for Black girls aged 50-70 is having 20 minutes of meditation.
This should be followed with 45-60 minutes of hitting the treadmill and whatever else you like to get your heart pumping. Oprah swears by at least 15 minutes of exercise every morning to boost her productivity levels and triple her energy.
She then does something to help “tune herself in,” like going for a nature walk, listening to her favorite jams, reading her book of the month, or preparing a nice meal – her meals consist of complex carbs, fibers, and protein.
Oprah then takes a bath and heads on to tackle the day head-on!
Our Chief Executive Officer’s Morning Routine
@petralomax, our beloved Founder, CEO & chief editor, says her best Black girl morning routine needs improvement, but she’s actively on it! LOL
To be 100% real, there are days she wakes up and has time to do more “for me,” and there are days where she literally has to steal those “for me” moments.
She wakes up between 6.00 a.m. and 6.30 a.m. At that time, things tend to be very chill and quiet.
If it’s an early morning, most of the time (no cap here), she checks the data on the blog before her feet even touch the ground!
Just a quick glance, nothing too serious, then she heads over to the bathroom to do either her long face routine or her quick face routine.
After skincare and “teeth care,” it’s time to hydrate and get the kiddo up for school.
Petra is a lucky mommy because her son is pretty good about getting himself ready without too much prompting.
While he does his thing, Petra and her husband are making him breakfast, packing lunches, and getting the dog out for a walk.
Would she like to get a workout routine done early? Sure! But that almost never happens!
School drop-off is between 7 and 7.30 a.m., and it’s go, go go, time until he is safely inside.
After school drop off, Petra starts stealing time “for me”! She might listen to an album on her way to grab a coffee, or a podcast, or something uplifting.
In between enjoying her cup of coffee and goofing off with the hubs, Petra absolutely loves taking care of her little flower bed.
This year, Petra started a small garden, and she’s all giddy and over the moon about it, y’all! She’s addicted! Watching everything grow is so surprisingly therapeutic. No words can describe that feeling!
After looking after the garden, Petra hops on the blog to get a little work done before she gets her workout done and before breakfast.
My Black Girl Morning Routine
As you might have guessed from how zealously I, @nimotess, wrote Zendaya’s morning routine, I am not much of a morning person either.
I get up at 7.30 (on a good day) and 9 a.m. (on a meh day) and sit in bed to give my brain time to switch back from dreamland to “normalsland”.
After convincing myself to wake up, I do my affirmations (“I am beautiful, I am worthy, and I am blessed. For me, money, love, peace, and happiness come easily; money, love, peace, and happiness love my company, and when money, love, peace, and happiness come, they last! Go forth and conquer Queen!”).
At 8.30 a.m. I do some mobility exercises, skip rope, and do at least one dance routine from Dance Fitness With Jessica.
Afterward, I put on some music (I’m currently obsessed with Lloyiso, Rosie Darling, Xenia Manasseh, and Brent Fayaz) or listen to my favorite podcast episodes (It’s Related, I Promise, The Self Love Fix, or Balanced Black Girl).
I take a shower, brush my teeth, do my daily skincare routine, and rock my “work from home” attire – and no, I don’t rock pajamas. I look like a corporate babe most of the days.
I make breakfast – whatever I feel like eating on that particular day. I’m not a breakfast person either, so I’m not usually keen on that. But I don’t skip my tea or coffee.
As I sip on my hot cup of whatever, I do a crossword puzzle. I’ve been doing this since the beginning of the month to help get my mind sharp and fresh for the day, and it’s been working like magic – thanks, washingtonpost.com, for those daily crosswords.
When I’m satisfied with the puzzle, I head over to class (post-graduate diploma currently underway) till 1 p.m. I take a lunch break, then hop on to work on my daily grind – ECT business.
