It is truly sad when women go to the hair salon and they feel unsafe, ridiculed, and unheard!
A woman (known as Betel M on Tiktok) went viral when she shared a video of her experience at a braid salon in Maryland.
She visited the salon to get her hair braided for her birthday and they told her she needed to have her hair washed and detangled before they did the style.
Betel said she read the website to ensure that she didn’t miss the memo but there was no indication that her hair needed to be washed, plus she was paying close to $250 for the style.
When she entered the salon she said the women made her feel as if her hair was an inconvenience and started to make fun of her in French even when she agreed to go next door to have her hair washed as they suggested.
According to the details Betel shared, ‘next door’ there was a Dominican Salon where she decided to just have her hair straightened instead of going back to the braid shop.

Since the video aired not only have TikTok users found the owner’s salon on Google… but her salon now has a one-star rating after all the negative reviews.

The bad salon is Lily Hair Express in Bowie MD. The nice Dominican Salon is Sashelvis Hair Salon.

These stylist are insane! Like why wouldn’t a washed hair be included in the service for $240?!?!??

“My hair is an inconvenience to everyone” hit hard. I have 3b hair and I can never find anyone to do it without making me feel bad about it

Your hair is SO beautiful! It’s not an inconvenience people are just BAD at their jobs. I have a place that washed and then braids I’m gonna send you
People are so mad they are actually posting negative comments on other customers’ videos.

The salon has since apologized after seeing the backlash and Betel is also pleading with her followers to stop posting negative comments as well.
On Tiktok they wrote:
Hello, My name is Lili, the owner of Lili hair express. I have been seeing the videos going viral on TikTok and I would like to use this platform to apologize for everything that happened that day I wasn’t in the shop that day.. I only came in to the videos and insults.
I have worked so hard to get here as a black woman and I wouldn’t want something like this to bring me down.
The employees responsible have been fired!!
My salon is a place to make people feel beautiful, heard and respected.. any form of bullying isn’t acceptable and will never be.
And for the comments please speak with facts and understand I am human just as you are.
It hurts me to see people see us this way with lies just because of the video posted that was misunderstood. Some people have mentioned us using glue for their wigs and how we shaved their hair bold.. please show us evidence so we take accountability.
Most of my employees are French speakers and do not speak English, but speak a little bit of English.
so not everything they say is addressed to you. One’s again I apologize for the inconvenience and I would address this more so it doesn’t happen in the future. I made efforts to reach out to her but she didn’t respond.. I am hoping she is fine and understands that I am deeply sorry and wouldn’t ever let this happen again. @lili_hair_express
Two things:
1. If you are a hair salon and you still do not understand the power of social media, we challenge you to get educated in etiquette, professionalism, and customer service.
2. If you are a customer and you have a bad experience at any establishment and you choose to post a video about it, be prepared for the cancellation that might happen to that business.
Cancel culture is real, and there is no doubling back.
Food for thought!
