2022 saw the comeback of 90s and 80s haircuts, which were, honest to god, absolutely gorgeous. But in 2023, people are looking to mix it up and bring some edgy haircuts like the bixie (a pixie and bob cut mashup), the mixie (the lovechild of the shaggy mullet and pixie), and the octopus cut (yeah, we love us some sea creatures).
Now get scrolling for some serious (and fun) haircut inspiration. Trust us; these hairstyles are the bomb!
Bixie Cut
Edgy. Classic. Jaw-dropping. That’s the only way to describe this mix between the bob and pixie haircut. It allows you to experiment with shorter lengths and can seamlessly grow out into a cute bob (hello, Bella Hadid).
Chanel Cut

Parisian style is going nowhere, and this haircut is proof. The bob consists of a chin-length or slighter, longer blunt cut with much movement. It also has a deep side part and is often paired with some sultry bangs to give that très chic Parisian feel. Its simplicity is sleek, but you can always choose to go the edgy way, like Zendaya.
Wednesday Addams Fringe

If Wednesday Addams (aka Jenna Ortega) hasn’t infiltrated your TikTok FYP, uuumm girl. What have you been? After getting us glued to the Addams Family spin-off series, Wednesday quickly got us pining after her iconic dance number (which she choreographed, BTW), grungy goth glam, and cute fringe (we can feel her piercing stare on us for calling her hairstyle cute right now).
Mixie

Not a fan of the 80s shaggy mullet? Looking for a more retro but modish, cool but rebellious haircut? Try the mixie. The hybrid of a mullet and pixie is essentially the latter but with two or three piecey layers are the base of the neck to give it some movement and texture.
The haircut is also low-maintenance and requires very little product to style it, making it perfect for lazy shawties.
Butterfly Haircut

If you love length but want to add body and volume to your mane, the butterfly cut is your best bet. It consists of long, feathery layers – lots and lots of them – and is the sexy modern take on the 90s bombshell blowout.
The Shullet/Skullet

The lovechild of a shag and mullet is versatile and effortlessly works on all hair textures when customized to one’s bone structure. It’s perfect for babes with thin hair as it adds volume and movement. However, you’ll need to go with a wash and go to style it as it craves some extra texture. In short, the messier it is, the sexier it looks.

Relax. It’s not as fishy as it sounds. However, like an octopus’ tentacles, the haircut has a rounded, full top that spreads down at the bottom. It’s like a chicer version of the shag but with an added dimension of wispy, fringy layers.
Top Tip: Don’t forget to get your stylist to keep the ends long to resemble an octopus’s legs!
Wet Locks Cut

Red carpet looks serve us some major inspo. And if you’re an awards season buff, you’ve definitely noticed several celebrities rocking the sexy mermaid-ey (wet) look.
And while we all can’t afford an entire glam squad to recreate the look, you can still sport a sultry glassy hair look by following Lizzo’s hairstylist’s guidebook here. She really nailed it with Lizzo’s look during the Grammys, making her a perfect point of reference.
The Sassoon/One-Length Cut

Love the look of a classic bob but want something slicker, sophisticated, and more unapologetic? Try the one-length bob. Slightly different from your regular bouncy bob, a Sassoon consists of a blunt, angled hairline that is shorter in the back and longer at the front. It’s the ultimate sleeky, boss babe haircut!
Wolf Cut

The standout haircut looks more like a mixie but with some wild, wispy layers. If you’re looking to do a test run, take a page of Ms. Keke herself and rock a cool, wolf-cut wig.
The Undercut

A stylized pixie is a perfect complement to an undershave/undercut. To do it, keep some coiffed, voluminous layers at the top, and then get your barber to do a cut fade at the side. And while it is one of the riskiest hairstyles to pull off, it’s one of the edgiest styles in the haircut book.
Close-Cropped Afro Cut

When the big chop looks like the most appealing option, go for this easy-to-maintain and style haircut. The cropped afro cut is cute and works perfectly for every hair type. It leaves enough hair to rock finger waves or do a simple side part to create a dramatic look. But it’s also short enough to help emphasize the natural texture of your strands.
