It’s been 25 years since The Boy Is Mine came out, and Monica discussed the album.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, she made it clear she doesn’t want artists to cover the hit song.
“I truthfully believe that it’s for Brandy and I… I appreciate that she and Rodney [Jerkins] asked me to be a part of the song and be a part of the record, but for me, it’s a part of history that I would love to remain untouched.”
Monica Is Okay With The Song Being Sampled
That said, the singer is all right with the song being redone or sampled in a way that makes it stand out.
“Now, I have heard the music used that is cool when people recreate it for themselves but not attempt to do what she and I did. If someone does something with it, I prefer that they make it their own and do something totally different, but I feel like what she and I did is sacred.”
The singer also addressed the rumors that she and Brandy have never liked each other.
“We are more than good… I [turned] 43 in October. I have nothing but love and admiration in my heart for her, and I’m good with everyone. I don’t have any issues with anyone…”
“As far as she and I go, a lot of what people hear is about two teenage girls. Now we’re two grown women, that’s a completely different thing. So it’s something that I kind of wish would go away, to be very honest. I wish people would stop putting the two against each other. I wish people would stop attempting to compare who sing better, who looks better, who outdid the other one, because I never came into the space with a spirit of competition anyway.”
Dallas Austin had earlier revealed that Monica punched Brandy before they performed The Boy is Mine as teens.
“The first time they actually saw each other [in person], I think it was the American Music Awards or something, and before they could actually get to the stage Monica decked her in the face backstage. I went ‘oh my God!’ This is before the performance so everybody’s [trying to] figure out how we’re going to have a performance that looks like they’re not at war with each other. It worked out because they were supposed to be at war with each other, so nobody could really tell that [Monica] had punched [Brandy] in the face before the performance.”
