Is Normani’s Album Coming Just In Time Or Too Late?

The singer’s solo project is coming six years after Fifth Harmony went on hiatus so the members could focus on their solo careers.
Camilla Cabello left the group in 2016 to do the same.
Normani sought a “clear vision” of her style and who she was musically for a while.
“For so long I feel like people got an idea of who I was in the entity of the group. Even within myself, I kind of got comfortable with that. So for me to kind of be detached from that has been an eye-opener for me and, like I said on the stage, me finally being able to discover myself and just different things, different parts of me. There are so many different layers and so many different portions that I haven’t necessarily been able to tap into that I have been introduced to, so it’s really, really cool. It’s like the sky is the limit.”
Since then, the singer signed to RCA Records and released a string of successful singles and duets, including:
- “Love Lies” with Khalid in 2018
- “Dancing With a Stranger” with Sam Smith in 2019
- “Wild Side” with Cardi B in 2021
- “Motivation” 2019
The latter track, Normani’s first solo single, went platinum.
Despite the clear hunger for her material, Normani still hasn’t dropped any EP or LP.
“I had a lot of growing to do. I had a lot of artist development, which I feel like people don’t take seriously. They throw artists on stage completely unprepared. And for me, that mentality was very important. Now, I’ve also been very critical on myself. So, I think it’s been a combination of things, but it’s definitely going to be worth the wait.”
Her Parents
According to Billboard Normani made it clear that at the highest point in her career her parents were going through their own personal battles.
The star revealed that while her solo hits like “Motivation” and “Love Lies” were taking off, her parents were privately battling cancer.
“F— all of this,” she said of her career after learning of the diagnoses. “This is bigger than the music. It’s bigger than what I’m trying to accomplish. This is life or death. All I wanted to do was be there for them.”
However, she added that her music ultimately ended up being a positive part of healing. “Honestly, music got them through the cancer treatments,” Normani recalled.
“I remember being on FaceTime with my mom while she was undergoing chemo and her asking me, ‘How’s the studio today? How’s the music coming?’” she says. At this moment, tears start to form in her eyes. She stammers a bit but goes on to say, “As hard as it was for me to not be with them as much as I wanted to, ultimately, pushing through made the circumstances of the last few years feel a bit lighter for my parents.”
