Tory Lanez’s lawyer Jose Baez went on a rant on Instagram.
Baez, referring to data from the Innocence Project, highlighted the immense number of unreliable eyewitnesses involved in wrongful convictions.
According to Vibe, the lawyer also mentioned the subsequent overturning of cases because of DNA evidence received after the conviction.
Tory Lanez’s Lawyer Is Mad At Eyewitnesses
To support his point, Baez shared two screenshots of eyewitness statements from Tory Lanez’s case that emphasized “mistaken witness identification.”
Despite the witness initially claiming to have seen one of the girls shoot during a dispute involving Tory, Megan, and Kelsey Harris, the witness later changed their statement.
In the revised version, the witness described a quick incident where Tory was seen “shouting.”
However, there was no mention of a gun, only “flashes from him.”
“Mistaken eyewitness identifications contributed to approximately 69% of the more than 375 wrongful convictions in the United States overturned by post-conviction DNA evidence.”
Earlier this year, Tory Lanez was found guilty and has remained in custody.
He was convicted of discharging a firearm with gross negligence, assault with a semiautomatic firearm, and carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a car.
Consequently, the rapper now faces a potential sentence of up to 22 years and eight months in prison.
The sentencing has been postponed twice because of changes in his legal representation.
Currently, Lanez is waiting for a judge’s decision regarding his motion for a new trial, scheduled to be heard on May 8.
Despite his conviction, Lanez maintains his innocence.
In April, he insisted that he’d been “robbed and deprived of a fair trial.”
The rapper accused prosecutors of suppressing exculpatory evidence that could prove his innocence.
