2022 has been a great year for Black women.
They have starred in everything from comedies to historical epics.
But which of their 2022 movies have stood out the most?
Let’s dive in!
Alice
Keke Palmer stars as Alice, a slave in 19th-century Georgia.
She escapes from her plantation and is shocked to learn that it’s 1973.
The movie finds inspiration from the heartbreaking real story of Mae Louise Miller, who was a slave until 1961.
The Woman King
“The Woman King” is an epic historical film with a primarily Black cast—something unheard of in a Hollywood movie with a $50 million budget.
“The Woman King” has a stellar cast featuring Viola Davis, Lashana Lynch, Thuso Mbedu, John Boyega, Angelique Kidjo, and more.
The movie follows the Agojie, an all-female group of warriors, as they battle a new enemy who wants to destroy how they live.
Nope
Another Keke Palmer film, ”Nope” is a sci-fi marvel.
It follows two siblings (played by Palmer and Daniel Kaluuya) who try to capture evidence of a UFO.
But because this is the creation of the genius Jordan Peele, it has a unique twist you must see to believe.
”Nope” was a hit with critics and viewers, earning $166 million and an 82% Rotten Tomatoes score.
And Palmer’s performance has already started to earn her award nominations.
The Batman
You can always rely on a Batman movie for pure popcorn thrills.
And ”The Batman” is among the 2022 movies which don’t disappoint.
It follows Bruce Wayne, who enlists Catwoman (played by a sensational Zoe Kravitz) to help him investigate a series of murders by a serial killer.
”The Batman” is deliberately slower-paced than previous Batman movies because the director wanted to focus on the detective side.
This makes the movie similar to vintage Alfred Hitchcock movies and classic Batman comics like ”Year One”.
A Lot of Nothing
Vanessa (Cleopatra Coleman) and James (Y’lan Noel) are a married couple who realize their next-door neighbor is a cop who just killed an unarmed motorist.
They decide to get justice, but things get complicated.
”A Lot of Nothing” has an intriguing premise, but if nothing else, watch the movie for its stellar, shocking opening.
Honk For Jesus. Save Your Soul
With a title like this, you might think ”Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul” is a Christian TV movie on Hallmark.
You’d be mistaken.
This is a dark comedy starring Regina Hall and Sterling K. Brown.
It follows the pastor and first lady of a megachurch who reopen it and try to rebuild their congregation after a scandal that sank them.
The movie is an eye-opening satire of modern religion that everyone should watch at least once.
Master
Many of us know Regina Hall from her comedic roles in films like ”Scary Movie”.
But she is also a kickass dramatic actress.
And her latest example of this is ”Master.”
In this film, Hall plays Gail Bishop, the first Black master of an elite university.
That sounds like a dream job, right?
Wrong.
On top of dealing with entitled students, Bishop also has to deal with a spate of supernatural incidents: yes, the university is haunted.
”Master” is simply one of the scariest 2022 movies you’ll watch.
Nanny
This is among the 2022 movies that have criminally flown under the radar.
”Nanny” is a horror film that follows an undocumented Senegalese immigrant as she tries to bring her son to the US.
But as she gets closer to realizing her goal, she experiences a violent presence in both her life and her dreams.
Barbarian
What would you do if the house you rented was double-booked by a strange man?
On top of it, what if that house had dark, chilling secrets?
This is the premise of ”Barbarian,” another horror movie on this list (there seem to be a lot of scary 2022 movies, but they are all fantastic watches).
Georgina Campbell gives a great performance as the movie gives one twist after another.
If you want an unpredictable experience, you could do worse than ”Barbarian.”
The Silent Twins
”The Silent Twins” stars Letitia Wright and Tamara Lawrence as real-life twins June and Jennifer Gibbons.
The twins were known for only communicating with each other.
After a vandalism spree, they were sent to a psychiatric hospital.
But because of their inhuman treatment, their only choice was to separate or die together.
”The Silent Twins” is among the most heartwrenching 2022 movies you can watch, and it should be on your must-watch list.
Cheaper By The Dozen
If you’re in the mood for something family-friendly, ”Cheaper By The Dozen” is a fantastic choice.
Starring Gabrielle Union, the film follows two parents with ten kids from different marriages.
They try to balance business—they own a breakfast-based restaurant and are trying to franchise it—and family—raising ten kids isn’t easy, no matter who you are.
”Cheaper By The Dozen” is full of laughs, lessons, and heartfelt moments and is among the best 2022 movies for families.
Kimi
Zoe Kravitz shines in one of the most thrilling 2022 movies.
She acts as Angela Childs, an agoraphobic tech worker who finds evidence of a violent crime.
She tries to report it, but the case goes nowhere.
Now, she must leave her apartment if she wants to seek justice.
Gatlopp: Hell Of A Game
After a guy gets divorced, his friends come over for a reunion—it’s been nearly a decade since they last met.
They play a drinking game called Gatlopp, but it’s not just any game; if they don’t open up and confront their past, the game will force them to play it for eternity.
Emmy Raver-Lampman stars in one of the most delightful 2022 movies.
Bodies Bodies Bodies
Amandla Stenberg stars in this comedy horror movie.
A group of wealthy twenty-somethings meet in an isolated mansion and play Bodies Bodies Bodies.
In this game, one person plays a killer, and the others try to escape.
But people start to die for real, which sets off a gory chain of events.
Black Women Are Spectacular In 2022 Movies
Black women are killing it this year, from Zoe Kravitz to Viola Davis.
The 2022 movies I’ve mentioned are well-acted, decently scripted, and entertaining.
