Let’s be real: that afternoon energy slump is no joke. No matter if we’re at work, been chillin’ at home, or are out and about running errands, we all tend to lose a little bit of steam as the day progresses.
And the worst thing about it? We rarely have routines dedicated to that oh-so-common midday slump.
We know how to start the morning energized or wind-down for bed, but what about when that afternoon tiredness sets in our minds and bodies?
We don’t really think about it too much when preparing for our day, unfortunately.
No worries if you don’t know where to start—we got you covered! Try this quick afternoon wellness routine to get you out of your midday slump.
Stretch, stretch, and stretch some more.
By the time afternoon hits, we’ve already spent hours of our day sitting at the office, chasing the kids around, or doing whatever else takes up our time and energy.
So at this point, it’s so very necessary to give your body a break with some much-needed stretching.
It doesn’t have to be anything too complicated, either! Start out by doing simple movements like bending over to touch your feet, spreading your arms, and even wiggling your fingers and toes.
The goal here is to increase mobility and release some stiffness.
And we know it’s the middle of the day, so we’re not asking you to break a shower-worthy sweat.
Rather, we want you to step back into your body and not let allow it to be overrun and neglected all because of the hustle and bustle of the day.
Cut the caffeine, increase the water.
Drinking coffee and tea in the morning is a habit as old as time! A large portion of us love to get our warm drinks in to start the day, but did you know that this one habit could be why you’re crashing so hard in the afternoon?
Yup, the energy tends to wear off by then, making you incredibly tired and in need of a nap or another boost. However, drinking caffeinated beverages too late in the day could really mess up your opportunity to have a good night’s sleep at the end of the day.
So instead of grabbing another coffee, tea, or energy drink midday, cut it off right at noon and opt for water instead. Long story short, caffeine can dehydrate you and dehydration can make you sluggish and sleepy—which adds to the intensity of your energy crash.
Right after your freeing afternoon sketch, grab some water (or green juice!) and start building your energy back up, naturally.
Tap back into the things you love.
What gets you going in the morning?
It could be something like that super funny podcast you love so much; your favorite song you’ve been obsessed with all year long; or that motivational Ted Talk that gets you pumped and ready for the day each and every time.
Think about the feeling it gives you in the morning. It’s gone by the afternoon, isn’t it?
Let’s be completely honest: feeling motivated typically doesn’t last throughout the day. And so, it’s smart to treat motivation and inspiration like gas in a car, and refuel when needed!
Now you’ve done your stretch and adequately hydrated your body, now it’s time to feed your heart and soul with something that’ll have you absolutely loving life.
It could be a playlist, affirmation on Instagram, or even a good book. Whatever it is, let it be uplifting.
