In a parallel universe, SZA became a marine biologist and never considered a music career.
However, that reality nearly became real.
If you’re curious, the UT Marine Science Institute defines a marine biologist as someone who studies biological oceanography and the related fields of geological, physical, and chemical oceanography to understand marine organisms.
SZA Has Always Loved The Ocean
Comedian Trevor Noah mentioned SZA’s alternative career during the 65th Grammy Awards, which shocked most of the audience.
“This is a woman who almost became a marine biologist and if she had, there would be no theme song for killing your ex. Please welcome SZA.”
However, the singer has never kept the news secret.
In a 2020 Rolling Stone interview, the singer revealed her love of science and marine life.
She knows how significantly and rapidly the ocean is changing.
She would spend six months focusing on entomology–here, the singer would categorize species in Madagascar or the Galapagos.
She Isn’t The Only One Interested In Marine Biology
While SZA’s interest in marine biology is fascinating, she’s not the only celebrity interested in it.
Tracy Morgan’s interest in marine biology grew through his daughter.
She revealed her love of the ocean and said her favorite animal was a shark.
So, naturally, Morgan built her a massive shark tank in their backyard spanning 20,000 gallons.
The tank has nearly fifteen sharks–not the terrifying big ones from horror shark movies, but smaller ones.
Morgan also installed several more fish tanks inside the house to help inspire his daughter to embrace her passion and become a marine biologist.
SZA isn’t the only musician who could have had a different career.
For instance, Kanye West was a Gap sales assistant before his music career kicked off, and Kelis was a bartender.
