Few American cities are as rich in Black culture as Houston, which you can tell from landmarks like Project Row House, Emancipation Park, and Third Ward.

So, you shouldn’t be surprised to see Black women-owned restaurants around the city.

We’ve taken a look at the best Black women-owned restaurants you can find in Houston.

But if we’ve left your favorite restaurant out, please let us know!

Mico’s Hot Chicken

Mico has always loved spicy food.

When she discovered Hot Chicken, Mico was hooked.

She traveled to Nashville to eat Hot Chicken at the source, and this inspired her to start her Hot Chicken spot.

In 2019, Mico teamed up with her husband to start a food truck selling these Hot Chickens.

Things picked up so fast that they soon owned one of the latest brick-and-mortar Black women-owned restaurants: Mico’s Hot Chicken.

What They Offer

Mico’s recipe is her take on Prince’s Hot Chicken, with searing-hot sandwiches with coleslaw and her signature sauce.

The restaurant also offers waffle-cut fries with cheese, spicy chopped chicken, and crispy tenders.

If you’re feeling adventurous, try the tangy house ranch dressing.

Alternatively, try the spicy honey, which you can drizzle on everything from ice cream to sandwiches.

Miss Patty’s Southern Soul & Sea Food Kitchen

If you’re in the mood for seafood, Miss Patty’s Southern Soul & Sea Food Kitchen is among the best Black women-owned restaurants you can try.

Miss Patty started working in restaurants at a tender age in the Ivory’s Shrimp House kitchen.

Here, she learned how to keep her kitchen clean, peel shrimp, and cut potatoes, and soon learned how to cook fish, shrimp, and chicken.

This experience inspired Miss Patty to launch her food truck in 2012: The Food Patty Wagon.

In 2015, she opened another food truck: Miss Patty’s Seafood-N-Chicken Cuisine.

Recently, the Chicago native opened a brick-and-mortar restaurant called Miss Patty’s Southern Soul & Sea Food Kitchen.

What They Offer

  • Ox Tails
  • Fried Catfish

Owner Esther Lewis-Bernard will tell you that soul food is in her blood, and we can’t deny it.

Esther’s mom, Mamma Lewis, was a Cajun cuisine master, and her great-grandmother, Mary Lewis, was famous for her country-style cooking.

You can experience that history when you visit one of Houston’s most iconic Black women-owned restaurants.

Esther’s Cajun Cafe & Soul Food has rich traditional food like Smothered Pork Chops and Cheesy Chicken.

The restaurant also offers tasty accompaniments like cornbread, creamy potatoes, and mac n’ cheese.

And by eating at Esther’s Cajun Cafe & Soul Food, you are helping the local community: Esther gives back through food donations, scholarships, and other contributions.

  • 2004 Super Bowl
  • Magic 102

Unfortunately, Jeanette passed in 2019.

However, her kids continue her legacy: Jeanelle and Craig, Jr.

In 2016, Lynn and Nakia Price opened a stand selling barbecue turkey legs at the Houston Rodeo.

Because of the delicious turkey legs, the two quickly gained a following from locals and celebrities like Snoop Dogg, Kevin Hart, and Deshaun Watson.
