Muni Long has shed light on creating Rihanna’s 2010 hit song, California King Bed.
According to Complex, the songwriter was in Miami and looking for furniture online for her move to LA.
The Runners’ Jermaine Jackson, with whom she was working on the song, asked her how it was going.
“I didn’t have anything because I had been messing around, and I looked at my computer. I was like, ‘Oh, I got a title.’ I said, ‘California King Bed,’ and he said, ‘OK,’ and then he left. So I was like, ‘Oh, now I gotta write that.'”
Muni Long Spent The Next 10 Minutes Writing A Future Hit
“I wrote the song in like 10 minutes. I was like, ‘Turn it up, let me get this done real quick,’ so I could go back to looking for my furniture. Originally, they were trying to pitch it to Kelly Clarkson.”
However, the song didn’t go to Kelly Clarkson–who Muni Long wrote the song for.
Instead, her publisher revealed that Rihanna would get the song.
“I was super excited. She was on tour at the time, but she cut the song, and the rest is history. You wouldn’t think that she would do something like that. What that did for the trajectory of my career as a creative was massive. After that, I did work with her in the studio many times, but that was my first entry point into my journey with Rih.”
California King Bed was part of RiRi’s 2010 album and became a hit–it has over 332 million YouTube views.
Muni Long next wrote Rihanna’s next song, Watch n’ Learn.
Her other song credits include:
- Fifth Harmony’s “Worth It”
- Kelly Clarkson’s “Love So Soft”
- Ariana Grande’s “Imagine”
- Selena Gomez and the Scene’s “Who Says”
- Pitbull’s “Timber”
She also released “Made for Me,” a track which went viral and debuted at the Billboard Hot 100.
