There was a time when Valentine’s Day was all the rage, and being single made you an outcast.
Then the world woke up, and we realized it was not a big deal.
That said, you’ll still be bombarded with countless romantic ads, couples stand out more than ever, and red roses are everywhere.
So, how can a single Black woman make it through this day without feeling a tinge of sadness?
Don’t worry; we’ve got you!
Follow our tips, and you’ll have a fantastic Valentine’s Day.
Take Yourself Out
People massively underrate the therapeutic effect of taking yourself out.
You control everything and don’t have to compromise or lower your standards–treat yourself the way you deserve to be treated.
Reserve a spot at your favorite restaurant, get glammed up and order your favorite foods, dessert, and wine.
Then, if you’re up for it, go and watch a movie.
Buy a ticket to the new movie you’ve been dying to watch, and enjoy it.
Reconnect With A Single Family Member Or Friend
If you’ve wanted to catch up with a friend or family member–and they are also single–now is the time.
Text them, schedule a time, and get your favorite wine close by.
You’ll feel amazing when you rekindle your friendship, and it can be therapeutic to catch them up on your life’s goings-on.
You can also call someone who loves you, like your mom or sister.
You’ll likely have a fun conversation, and they will make you feel loved even more.
Treat Yourself To Your Favorite Snacks
Snacks make the world go round–if they don’t, you’re eating them wrong.
After all, foods might nourish your body, but your favorite decadent snacks nourish your soul.
They could be homemade candies, chocolate-flavored doughnuts, or buttered popcorn–whatever it is, it should have meaning and make you feel warm inside.
You can have it for breakfast or a post-dinner snack as you watch your favorite movie or TV show.
Take A Scenic Trip
If you have the time and budget, travel to a nearby town by bus or–my personal preference–train.
No subways allowed.
Take in the sights and remind yourself of the beauty of life and how nature engulfs us in its majesty.
Take a ride through mountainous terrain, a coastal area, or green countryside.
Reach your destination, have a decadent snack, go shopping, and return home feeling rejuvenated.
Pamper Yourself
…because you’re worth it.
If you have a bathtub, make it your Valentine’s Day sanctuary.
After a long day at work, go home and fill your bathtub with delights like scented salts, fizzy bombs, essential oils, and plenty of bubbles.
Wear a hydrating face mask and get a cushioned back pillow to relax into.
Then surround yourself with scented candles, chocolates, and a bottle of your favorite wine.
As a single Black woman, make this night about you–honestly, you deserve it.
Learn Something New
You probably have a skill you’ve always wanted to learn but have never done it.
Well, now is the time!
Schedule your Valentine’s Day to pick up that skill.
It could be a language class, a workout class, or even a skill like cooking, coding, or knitting.
That evening, you can spend time learning what will improve your life instead of wondering where the good men are.
You can join a physical class or an online one.
Or, if you’d like to learn privately and in your own time, you can try sources like MasterClass or Duolingo.
Valentine’s Day can also be the time to action your New Year’s resolutions–the ones you haven’t started, at least.
Do Volunteer Work
I agree–a single Black woman doing volunteer work on Valentine’s Day doesn’t sound glamorous.
However, it’s therapeutic and will make you appreciate what you have in life.
Offer your time and efforts at a local animal shelter, hospital, or nursing home, and give others the rare gift of your service.
If you still want to help others but don’t want to leave the house, you can become a virtual volunteer for establishments like Instant Wild or Smithsonian Institute.
The world will thank you; this is the best karma you could receive.
Work Out
Getting your heart racing is always a good thing, and it’s just what a single Black woman should do this Valentine’s Day.
You could go jogging or cycling, take a long walk, try a new fitness app, or even go to the boxing gym and punch away your negative feelings.
However you work out, you will get those essential feel-good endorphins, and your day will end on a high.
Watch A Standup Comedy Show
Feeling down in the dumps and don’t want to work out to improve your mood?
Look for a local standup comedy show.
Comedians will offer uproarious tales of dates gone wrong and nightmare relationships and share stories of their evil exes.
You will also be in a crowd with other single people, which should create a feeling of camaraderie.
And let’s not forget, laughter will make you feel loads better than before.
Every Single Black Woman Should Celebrate Valentine’s Day
However you spend it, Valentine’s Day is only one day a year.
So, it’s not a day that should make you feel down.
Instead, you should feel proud to be a single Black woman and celebrate yourself and the good things in your life.
