Everything You Need To Know About Ginger Hair On Black Women Including Photos

Redheads, gingers, carrot tops – these are all the names associated with women and men with ginger hair. And who do we usually associate fiery natural red hair with? People of Irish or Scottish descent only. Which is far from the truth.

According to the BlackAmericanWeb, Black women can also have naturally ginger hair, and the reasons for this are incredibly fascinating. So get your steaming cup of coffee, notepad, and flashy pen, and let’s look at the history of Black women with ginger hair.

Can Black Women Naturally Have Ginger Hair?

As mentioned above, yes. Black women can have naturally red or ginger hair. And this is why:

  • If you remember your Biology right, or at least your nana’s tales, both parents have to carry the ginger hair gene for a child to be born with it. With the Irish and Scots, this is a no-brainer. But for Black people, this gene is believed to have found its way into the African community in the Caribbean over 400 years ago – yes, 400!

According to the history books, many Irish and Scottish people were shipped to the West Indies as indentured servants in the 1600s and (we all know) almost a third of Irish/Scots carry the redhead gene.

  • Africans and people from the Caribbean islands have also been known to have bright red hair due to a gene mutation in the melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R). Yap. We got a bit Dexter-ish there, but what this means is that they have a particular gene that regulates melanin in skin pigmentation, eyes, and hair. Nonetheless, the distinctive gene only occurs when both parents carry the unique receptive gene.

  • Another reason you might spot a Black woman with ginger hair is due to Albinism. Albinism is the lack of melanin, and it could cause one (who would be expected to have darker hair, skin, and eyes) to have naturally reddish-golden strands.

If You Don’t Have Ginger Hair, How Can You Achieve It?

We all can’t be gingers (given that only 2% of the world population are redheads). So, if you’re looking to tap into the trendy ginger hair phase, here are a couple of products you should use:

Revlon ColorSilkLuminista Red, $9
